UVS8 SE Out Of Memory
I'm experienced with PC's, but new to Video Editing and DVD authoring.
A copy of UVS8 SE came with my DVD burner, so that's where I'm beginning.
I've read the Recommended Procedure, the Converting Super8 Films tutorial, and the Camcorder to DVD with VideoStudio tutorial - which were all very helpful.
My first project is to convert my Super8 movies to DVD. First, I copied them to VHS-C with my camcorder. I have about 1.5 hours of movies to edit and burn. Then, I copied them to the PC using DVD Express and the CapWiz software that came with it (NTSC, MPEG, Video data rate: variable 3999kbps). Now for the fun part. I can launch UVS8 and begin to edit the movies: Remove sound, trim off the start and end points, crop the borders, and then save the first 3 minutes (File->SaveAs). Then, I begin to trim this 3 minute video. I'm able to Split the video, and delete unwanted frames several times, and then get an 'Out of Memory' error message. I may be able to continue for awhile longer, and then UVS8 tells me that it has a severe error and will restart (losing anything that hasn't been saved.)
- I've downloaded the UVS8 patches, but it's been so long since I started working on this that I can't remember if they're installed. According to UVS Help panel, I'm at UVS8 SE 8.01.0107.
What I've noticed:
- I built 2 computers for friends last year, and both were able to use UVS8 without this problem (the smallest one was 2.4ghz, 1gb ram, WinXP, ATI PCIe 128Mb video card)
- As soon as I launch UVS8, my CPU usage goes from near 0% to 100%, even when UVS is idling at the main menu.
- My PC is a few years old, and I've souped it up about as much as possible (P4 2.0Ghz, 512Mb RAM, ATI AGP4X 128Mb video card, 250Gb hard drive). I only had a basic PCI video card earlier this year when I tried UVS8 for the first time. The entire PC would crash and reboot every time I tried to use the Preview panel and jump to a different spot in the video - this problem was resolved with the new video card)
- After doing some initial editing, and applying the Crop Filter, the Preview was unable to keep up when I clicked Play (jerky video, or sometimes only video updates only every 10 seconds).
So, what are your thoughts? Will this PC be able to handle UVS8SE? Should I upgrade to UVS10+? Is there any way that I can get UVS8SE to work on this PC? Why does UVS8 take my CPU usage to 100%?

It won't be racing along but it should do. Your problem must be elsewhere. I would look at my memory module first. There are memory checking utilities available at the Microsoft website. Run a thorough check and also check the HDD for errors.
What are your settings for virtual memory in Windows and what are your preferences set up in VS 8?

I recall very distinctly that VS8 was notorious for having a bad memory creep problem such as you describe. Unfortunately, I don't know if or how it was solved...
Perhaps someone else might know. I seem to recall John Hunter being associated with posts on this way back when... but I could be wrong.

I recall there being a memory leak with a past version of VS. I don't remember if it was v8 or not. A subsequent patch fixed it but, obviously, that patch is no longer available.

@Ken & Jeff- As soon as I launch UVS8, my CPU usage goes from near 0% to 100%, even when UVS is idling at the main menu.
I have never used VS 8. In fact, I only used VS 5 for one project and upgraded to MSP right away. Only now have I started to use VS again, VS10+.
The above statement of the OP indicates to me that there must be more than just a memory leak involved. What do you thinK?

BlackLab -- Thanks. I am sure it was a memory leak in VS8. And in fact, the updates are still available at http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp80.htm. I couldn't see any specific mention of one of them fixing a memory leak. And only two of them will apply to SE versions.

Update:
- I created a Video Editor Profile for Windows, freeing up about 70Mb of memory.
- I launched UVS8 again, and edited the same Super8 clip. I was able to finish splitting out the scenes of the first 3 minute clip without any errors!
- CPU usage is no longer pegged at 100% !!
- I'm continuing to go thru the Converting Super8 Films tutorial, but can't find the v07.avi sample clip (5-4-3-2-1 Countdown).

I believe that is correct.WonderfulLife43 wrote:OK, I've found the Extra Content, and have continued going thru the Super8 to DVD Tutorial. So far, so good, except that I wasn't able to find the 'Reverse video' button in UVS8SE. I assume that the Reverse feature is new with V9 or V10.

Success, then another problem
OK, first, I want to thank everyone for their help in getting my first Super8 conversion project completed. I think it looks great! (It's about 1.5 hours, with nice titles, transitions, and music....).
However, I have 2 more questions.
1. I burned a couple of copies of the first project to see how it looked on my Panasonic DVD player. It played fine for awhile (about 20 minutes), then started having problems (pixelated video, jumpy audio). I went to work, came back 10 hours later, and it played almost perfectly in the same DVD player. It also plays well in a cheap generic DVD player that I have. So, my guess is that my player is suspect. I'm going to try it on a few other players and see what happens. I may try to burn it again, this time selecting a slower burning speed. Additional info, I burned both a DVD-R and DVD+R DVD. The DVD+R won't even Play on my Panasonic (but it works fine on the cheap generic one upstairs
)
2. This one is bugging me big time. OK, so after finishing the first project, I'm working on a second one. My in-laws taped some of their old slides and 8mm movies onto VHS. I captured it (CapWiz) the same way I captured my first project, and started Editing. I noticed that the Preview screen wasn't keeping up with me (I pressed Play, the counter took a few seconds to start, then the Audio would start to play, and finally the Video replay would catch up (I didn't have a problem with this on Project #1).
So, I dug a little deeper, and found this: When I launch uLead Video Studio 8 SE, my CPU immediately goes to 100% and stays there, and this is just sitting at the main menu, and not doing anything (This did not happen on Project#1 after creating the Video Editor profile). I'm still running with a Video Editor profile to free up as much resources as possible, and I also added RAM, going from 512Mb to 896Mb.
Any ideas why vstudio.exe would use up all 100% of my CPU? (I'm sure that this is causing my performance problem while Editing.
Thanks, Rick

Re your first problem, as you have found, big name brands of DVD players are notoriously fickle in playing home made DVDs. It is usually a combination of a particular brand or type of disc, the colour of the dye used on the disc, the burning speed and possibly other factors. I usually recommend, apart from experimenting with different kinds of discs, lowering your burning speed to 4x, or if the disc speed rating and your burner won't go that low, then the lowest rated speed for that particular disc.
As for your second problem, your description of the the CPU usage going straight to 100% sounds exactly like very much earlier posts relating to the memory creep in VS8 which I have already repeatedly mentioned.
Apart from upgrading to a more recent version of VS, the only thing I can suggest is to switch off VS, and make sure in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) that it is no longer resident in the Processes. Rebooting the computer is probably also a good idea, thus allowing you to start with a completely 'fresh' VS8 that way.

Ken,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Regarding the 100% CPU issue, here's what I've done:
- Bumped the PC from 512Mb to 896Mb of RAM.
- Rebooted the PC several times, trying different userids, both with and without the special Video Editor profile.
- Uninstalled (using the recommended procedure to completely remove it from the PC) and re-installed it (along with the patches).
And, no matter what I do, the CPU immediately goes to 100% and stays there as soon as I launch UVS8.
I have no problem upgrading to a newer version of UVS, but I wonder if they will run on my PC (Win2k, 2.0Ghz CPU, 896Mb RAM, 128Mb AGP4x video card)?? In my experience, newer versions of software tend to place bigger demands on the hardware.

No reason why it should not. I am sure there are a number of users out there with not dissimilar, and perhaps even 'worse' set ups, and also still using Win2000! And they will be using VS10 with no problems.
I certainly have VS9 operating on my old Dell laptop with only 1GHz P3 processor and 512 MB RAM, and it works just fine.

Check my System info. I bit more RAM but nothing special. I have not yet had any problems and have NO plans up switching this machine to XP, let alone Vista until I absolutely have to.
So far I have captured 2 hours tapes, edited, saved parts, re-edited, played with all type of transitions and even tried the fancy motion titles in the Create Disk area. No problems here.
