I don't think you need to un-install & re-install the Divx Software.
Did you reboot the machine to start out fresh, and under the compression options in the AVI module are there any previous versions of the Divx Codec listed instead of the new Divx version you just installed?
My Divx installtion didn't show up right away either because there was another Divx encoder file in the VS main directory I had to remove.
After I removed the divx file in the VS directory (can't remember exactly where that was) then the Divx 6.4 was displayed in the AVI Compression DropDown Box.

There is no BEST. It's what works BEST for you.

I just happened to have installed the new DivX 6.5 Pro codec five minutes ago. I rebooted the computer after it, though I am not sure this is completely necessary.
On rebooting, I checked in GSpot to see that the codec was there -- it was. But to check still further, I opened VS10+. I dropped any old mpeg-2 file into the timeline. Then I went to Share > Create Video File. In the drop-down menu, I don't have any DivX options. (That is normal.)
So I went to Custom down at the bottom. I then selected Microsoft AVI as the 'Save as [file] type' I wanted, and clicked the Options button. That brings up 3 tabs, the third of which is labelled AVI. I clicked on that, and then clicked on the drop down menu beside Compression.
And there are the bottom was DivX 6.5. When I selected it, I could then Configure it by clicking the button below the Compression box.
Does yours not do the same?
By the way, of perhaps wider interest, DivX have just brought out their own full DivX editing program called DivX Author. It includes, amongst other features, the ability to insert interactive menus, and even multiple subtitles, in DivX discs -- though I suspect for the moment these may only play on Ultra DivX certified players. But if it can otherwise edit video in other formats and convert them properly to DivX, it may be worth looking at. Cost seems reasonable too (US$39.99).
