Disgrace

Post by Trevor Andrew »

Hi

Again I am sorry very sorry to the way the forum is going.

Below is a reply from what I consider senior members of this forum.
Yes some text, you may say were taken out of context, but I do not think so.

The poster sent two posts in total.

And we shot him down, these are our replies:-

If I was the moderator of this forum, your post would have been edited or deleted.

I know what..... tomorrow night we all pop over to the Vegas what¡¦s it called forum and we post lots of threads saying how good our Ulead products are.

Maybe we can stop these clowns popping over here with their annoying half truths

No one cares that you are using another product, we all do the same.
It's the overtones in you posts that only reflect your inexperience working with video & related software.
Therefore, your judgement and opinions are very biased.

Then the very next post (2 total at the time) was all about how you found some new software that made all your troubles go away.

Granted, this is possible (and VMS is a very capable software kit), but the manner in which you conducted yourself leaves room for doubt of your true intentions

Yes --- he only made two posts and this is a totally disgraceful response
We are here to guide, help and give information.

2007 a year of sharing

Hi Trevor,

We'd really need a link to see the whole thread in context, but you've always been an honorable, hard working member of this Forum and I would trust your judgement on the issue.

Trevor -- I didn't buy into that original thread, though confess I felt a sneaking thread of annoyance at the original poster for the attitude he took. I guess I am biased therefore in favour of the responses of other posters in that thread. But that is what being human is all about.

My own attitude, though would simply have been to ignore it totally and let it die a natural death. So I am with you as far as that is concerned.

But here we are with you having initiated another thread on the wretched issue, merely perpetuating the ill feeling which you say you abhor...

You are not going to be able stop members from posting negative, critical or downright rude answers to particular threads, especially where the original post himself seems biased or critical or negative. That again is merely human and none of us here are angels!

So let's just let this whole thing die!

Yes I admit my response was not one of my better responses.

What are we all worried about?
He has gone.

Plus he obviously has more money and time than I have (Vegas is EXPENSIVE and has a long learning curve - I tried the trial version and gave up after a couple of hours). I guess it's "horses for courses". VS is almost an entry level editor - well maybe not as Microsoft Movie Maker probably fills that spot.
If you are a professional you buy the best regardless of cost. For me the only thing VS doesn't do for me is proper moving path and everything else is reasonably simple to use and reasonably intuitive.

Didn't I once read that use VS as a newcomer and maybe move onto MediaStudio (or similar) if you feel that you have 'outgrown' VS?

Having now read the thread, it all seems like a bit of a storm in a tea cup. I don't think the original poster was particularly wise in his approach and he received a predictable response from the Forum.

Not our finest hour and now he's in a different Forum. We all move on.

But in the words of one of the worst songs of all time, Trevor...

"Don't give up on us, Baby!"

I think the point that Trevor is rightly making is that we need to be a bit more polite and professional in our responses to new members. He was citing that particular post as an example.

For our regular forum members who try and help out with problems I suggest that you create a standard response similar to the one I posted above.

The initial reply should be polite and courteous, if he later turns into an a** then OK perhaps we feel that the gloves should come off. At that point we need to either ignore the post completely or another simple standard response.

"I am sorry that we have been unable to assist you further and would suggest that you submit a technical support form to Ulead"

It's hard to be nasty towards someone who is being extremely nice.

Hi All

My only concern, and I am sure yours as well, is the well being of the forum.

We are seeing more posts than ever containing rude, insulting and aggressive content.
No posts should be subject to any verbal attacks.
The barrage of abuse only serves to fuel discontent.

Ignoring bad posts may be the better way, the post soon drops out of view.
May-be I should have done that.

I am sure that if a new post arose, containing similar content as the replies, it would be deleted.

I may have been out of order starting this new post, as this on its own will have aggravated the situation. But I did see red and was very annoyed.

If you really need to send verbal abuse could you please you use the PM system, because I don¡¦t want to read it.

My post was suppose to target the forum in general and the trend it seems to be taking.

Again my only concern is for a clean, polite forum

If I have upset or insulted anyone, then I apologise to you.

Best Regards

Trevor

Trevor,
I for one think your post will have served it's prupose and made the regulars sit back and examine the postings made of late.

I certainly have, and I have made one or two posts which perhaps in hindsight I shouldn't.

So, as Trevor says, some posts are best left unanswered, and I for one will be doing that, giving me more time to write better posts for those that truely want some help :P

Thanks Trevor,
sometimes a swift kick up the backside is needed - Ouch -

I don't think this thread has done any harm and in fact has helped to remind us that politeness costs nothing. Treat others how we would be expected to be treated ourselves.

It is all too tempting to get angry with a new user and say "Grrrr thats been asked several times before - now go away and do a search."
We regulars know what's been asked before and know where to point someone, I am not saying that it isn't right to say 'Please search before asking' - yes they should.

However do not bite someone because they failed to find what they were looking for. I have cause every now and again to visit other user forums for answers, perhaps a piece of PHPBB code or something relating to my new hauppauge TV card, I now have a Hauppauge HVR1300 in addition to my PVR 350 (now in my other computer.)

You tend to forget how hard it is to find something on some other forum until you try.

Yes I too am guilty of engaging the fingers before my brain, and posting negatively. However the part of Steve's previous post, the part highlighted in blue, hits home. Steve and anyone else that has served in law enforcement can relate to that. To illustrate this, I'll relate a particular incident that occurred in my early days as an officer.

I started my career as a Jailer. We had one inmate that was being held for a court appearance on mental incompetence. This was a regular routine with him. He had been ordered a few years earlier to a mental institution. This inmate was 6'8" 280+lbs, "strong as a bull". This first incident he "went off" (got real angry), shouting how he was going to kill us, then punched the exterior security window of his cell. The window was 6" security bullet-proof plexiglass. In 2 blows it was completely broken and he ripped it out. He has also literally destroyed jail cells, knocking down doors, almost ripping the bars out of the holding cell. We would keep in in a concrete isolation cell.Ok now you understand just how strong this guy is, and his mental state.

Fast forward about 3 yrs: He escapes from the mental institution and shows up in the lobby of our department. The dispatcher, a woman is the only person in the office at the time. Luckily he doesn't try to rip the doors off. Dispatcher puts the call out, saying he is very angry, yelling etc., and may try to get at her. I was the first officer to arrive, and approached him, outside at the time. This is where Steve's post is related... I started talking to him, in a calm voice. During this time, back-up officers arrived and they formed a circle around us. You know like in school when 2 boys got into a fight, how others would circle around.. Well he read into this, and stated to me "You know I could kick all of your a**es, and just may do it". I acknowledged this, but continued to talk calmly. (I was scared to death at this point, because I knew that he could). End of story, we were able to take him into custody, with no resistance. A few months later when he was back for another court hearing, he told me that he didn't fight us at that time, because I treated him like a person, and not an animal, like others had in the past. Yes in the past it has taken up to 15 officers to control him.

I know that if he had fought us, I probably would not be telling this now, and he would not have been able to tell me why he didn't... ( Oh by the way I was only 5'8", 165 lbs).

Nice story vidoman.

To come back to what this post is all about: As everyone here knows, I'm guilty as charged. I tend to get angry at someone who does seem to only be here to waste our time.

I will certainly try to hone my ignoring skills in future but I will not repeat the same questions umpteen times every day because the new poster doesn't care to provide any info at all and doesn't seem to be willing to do anything to help, sorry.

I'll leave these to our more polite members here
