Edited text becomes larger

In PI 12, I have somehow gotten certain text objects into a state that when I try to edit them (Shift-E), the size of the bounding box stays fixed, and as I delete text, the text expands to fit the box. I want to return the text to its normal behavior, where the box gets smaller to fit the text, and the text stays the same size. I've tried all sorts of reset object commands, but to no avail.

I have created a new text object and compared its properties to the text objects with which I am having problems. The two things I have found that are different is that the "problem" text objects have "Reset Text/Path Object" enable (i.e., not grayed out) in the "Convert Object Path" menu. Also, in the Text Tool Settings toolbox, the "Split Text" options are grayed out for the problem text.

Any ideas?
