missing chapter

Post by famj »

Hi im a total newbie at this so forgive me if i dont give all necessary info:

Ive made my first dvd disc with 15 chapters, but the last scene/chapter does not seem to be on the disc ...

If i let the film run through its perfect until getting to the last scene (it starts with an 8sec title which is before the chapter point) this title does not appear and the dvd goes back to the menu.

It also wont play the last scene if i just select the last scene via the menu - it goes to a point part way through the first scene for some reason.

Just to clarify each chapter is preceeded by a title so if the user just runs the film through he sees a title then the chapter. However if he manually selects a chapter it begins just after the title. (reason for this setup being i wanted thumbnails of film content rather than a picture of the title on the menu)

minidv source saved as dv avi using firewire

Standard recommended settings apart from i use cbr.

4820 CBR dolby 2 ch

2hrs of film (it says it fits with 30MB to spare) LFF

PAL

no error codes - it always says completed sucesfully.

Can you please clarify - do you have one long video file with 15 chapters, or do you have 15 seperate video files, which would actually be titles?

If it is one video file with chapters, do you possibly have the Preview Range set? You will know this if you have a red line just above your timeline when in the edit stage.

If it is 15 seperate files, are you sure the last one is included?

And, BTW, you can change the image of the thumbnail by double clicking on it in the edit menu stage. You can then change what part of the video is displayed, however the chapter, or title, will begin from the beginning.

I never put more than 4gb on a disc if I can help it.

Have you made an image on the hdd? does this play ok?

Its one long film ive edited up and then split into 15 chapters at convenient points.

Preview range is identical to project duration so i think thats ok.

The tip about the thumbnails is excellent thanks and i will go back to how i wanted it in the beginning .

The whole film previews ok, then i create iso disc image - again i get sucessful msg. But it just doesnt seem to have the last 8 min on the disc.

Im putting 4.33Gb on th disc (in the yellow, but not in the red on the bar) - is it possible this is not totally accurate ?

If you've made an iso and this isn't correct and has the same error, then it is something that is wrong with the editing/authoring stage, not the dvd burning - fitting on - stage.
I'd still make it a bit smaller though.

Dropping the bitrate to, say, 4500 or even using VBR rather than CBR as you are, might reduce the overall size so that it stays in the green, rather than sneaking into the yellow. The quality should not be noticeably different either.

Or, if you have VS10, you could try using the 'reduce to fit' function.

Personally, if I have a project which is just a bit too big, instead of burning a disc or making an ISO file, I made a Video folder (Video_TS) instead. Then I process it in either DVDShrink or Nero Recode to make sure it will all fit on a single layer disc. This has always worked with excellent results.

Hey thanks guys. It does seem to be a simple matter of file size. I dropped the bitrate down to 4700 which was just a fraction into the yellow ... and i got 1hr 57 of the 2 hr film on the dvd. (it was previously 4820).

I think im on the way to my first complete film. You wouldnt believe the hours/months ive put in editing and even used a different programme to start which was really badly buggy and i almost gave up.

Black Lab : I couldnt get the thumbnail thing to work because in the edit menu stage i just have "disc 1" ie the saved file. Im assuming to do all 15 chapters and alter the basic thumb id need to split it back into the seperate chapters rather than save it all as 1 file.
