Smooth original camera moves get "choppy" or "

Post by hanspeter »

Hi all

I bought VS10 Plus because of the feature of importing directly DVD Video files, i.e. Video TS folders with VOB files taken on the mini DVD disk of my SonyHandycam DVD305 into the Video editor software.

I transfer the original video files to my computer (Laptop, AMD Athlon 2.2G; 512 RAM) and import them into VS10 via the Capture/Import DVD. The importing works correct and I can import the video with exactly the same scenes/chapters as the original video taken with the Handycam into VS10.
I then put the invididual clips into the required sequence, trim some of them, add a few titles and transisitions and that's it.
When I view the individual clips in the edit mode of VS10, the camera moves and/or zooms are exactly as smooth as the original video. However, when click the project mode in the preview window the whole video gets choppy at those parts where the camera moves (or zooms).

When I render the video in Share mode the complete video is of course choppy as well, and the same obviously when I burn it onto a DVD disk.

I use PAL DVD and 4:3 in the preferences.

Any good idea what could be the reason for this?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like it could be a field order problem. Try changing your projects field order and see if that fixes it. Go to File>Project Properties>Edit>General Tab>Frame Type.

Another easier way of making sure the project properties exactly match the properties of your imported video files right from the start is to first off go to File > Preferences > General and tick the box beside 'Show message when inserting first video clip into timeline'.

That way, when you start a project and drag your first imported clip into the timeline, a pop-up will appear asking if you want the project properties to match those of the clip. Say yes, and proceed to drag the other videos into the timeline, and do your editing. Then, when you go to Share > Create Video File > DVD, the new DVD-compatible mpeg-2 that will be produced will have exactly the same properties as your imported video, including the all important Field Order.

By the way, mini-DVD cameras appear to use Upper Field First as the Field Order. And so you have to maintain that throughout the project. Otherwise you get the sort of jerky effect you mention, plus combing of horizontal lines when panning and zooming.

Hi guys

thank you for quick response. I will check the field order when I find time during the week-end.
Does anybody have experience: do I start completely from scratch again with my video, or can I check the properties on one of the original clips and then make the project properties the same? This would obviously speed up as I would not have to make all the edit process again.

thanks for help

Yes, you can adjust the properties so that the single DVD-compliant file you produce after editing has the same properties.

My suggestions above were only designed for new projects you undertake in the future.

Good luck!

Hi again

it is a snowy Saturday afternoon here in Finland and a good time to do some video work.

Well, the recommendations I got above from you guys as well as in particular the RECOMMENDED GUIDE FOR VS 10 PLUS is really the key to the success:

as I said in my initial post, I import the files directly from my Sony DVD handycam with the "Import DVD" button in Capture and I get the VOB files imported exactly with the chapters as in the original video.

Now, the DVD VOB clips do have "Upper Field first" as the properties and the key here is to adjust the project properties to the same (they were in my case "Frame based" which caused the chopping video output).

Once the project is edited and finished, it is really worthand to create the mpeg file with "Create Video" in "Share". And here again: all the properties need to be the same as in the original video files (Click Options before you save).

Once the mpeg file is created and saved to your hard disk, close VS, open it again and then go to "Share" without having anything in the timeline. Import the just made mpeg video file, add your chapters and menus AND make sure also here that all project properties are again the same as in the imported video file (especially the field order!). Then burn it on disk and or create the Video TS folder on the hard disk.

This way I did it and now my videos are both smooth and perfect as the original ones, but nicely edited with titles, transitions, etc.

The reason why I purchased Ulead VS 10+ is really because it seems to be the only editor on the market that can import directly DVD video files from the Video TS folder that the handycam created and in addition the import tool allows to import the VOB chapters as they were in the original sequence.

To the ULEAD team I really recommend strongly to update the operations manual in this respect. A lot of disappointed customers could be avoided. The manual is simply "lousy".

Have a good time all, and I am sure there will be more questions to post from my side when my experience increases.

Best regards
