Hide Transition to edit Audio
Hi -
Running VS10 I have series of short clips (2 to 3 seconds each) between which I used the Crossfade Transition. Now, I need to edit the audio for these particular clips, but the transition effect is sitting on top of them - even in Audio View.
Is there a way to keep, but hide the transitions to allow me to edit the audio? I figure I can separate the audio from the video track, but am not done editing and may need to move these clips to another location.
Thanks!

You can re-attach the audio to your video clip after you split it. If you notice, after you split the audio your video clip will show the mute icon. Just unmute the video clip and your audio is re-attached. I've never done that after adjusting the audio, but I assume it would keep your adjustments.

Have you expanded out the timeline view to show your video frame by frame? That should allow you clear access to the audio stream.
I might also add the comment that you will need to be very careful about the time you assign to the transition effect when you use it between clips which themselves are only 2 to 3 seconds long. The transition takes up some of the length at the end of the preceding video and part of the start of the next one. If the transition is one second long, then for a 2 second video clip, say, what you will see on the screen will only be there for 1.5 seconds... It could quite literally appear as a flash in the pan!

Hi Ken,
Yes - I stretched the timeline as far as it would go, but one particular transition was intentionally set to quickly move across two very small clips and "completely" covers the clips. I tried splitting the audio and that worked fine for now. In reference to your transition effect time comment - being aware of this, I intentionally stretch my clips to accommodate for the time loss when adding the effect
The video in question: I just posted this video to YouTube ... check it out if you'd like:

(completely non-commercial - hope it's ok to post this link here on the forums)
Thanks,

Love it!!!
I have two little poodles who carry on like that half the day, it seems -- the half when they are not sleeping off all the action!
But I liked the choice of music, and the synchronising of the action with the beat in the opening scenes was particularly clever... See what you mean by the short clips and transitions too. Well done!

thanks - your words brought a smile to my face. this video was taken from about an hour of total raw footage. i had trouble deciding on clips sometimes - because i had more material than the length of the song called for
. there are a few more subtle synchronizations with the song - where a cat's paw may strike the other cat to the downbeat of the tune within some of the clips. a true labor of love. thanks.

thanks ron - i'm on my way to post it now
... i guess i am luck in that these two cats are 2-1/2 and 1-1/2 years old. plenty of fight still in them. my office is in the same room of the house where they hang out. all i have to do is leave my video camera within arms reach and i could get hours of this action daily

That is very cool. Even gave it a 5 star rating! It's funny, when I watch videos now I'm looking mosty at the editing, not the content. Well done.
We often get questions about how to sync video to music. If you can explain it in a clear and concise way Steve may deem it suitable for the Tutorials section.

i know there's an official name for what i'm doing - like "rollback timing" or some such thing (i'm sure i'm not even close on the true name of this), but i often locate the video "hit" (in this case "hit" is defined as one paw striking any part of the opposing kitty) that will be synced with the audio "accent/down beat" - line 'em up and work backward from there. other times it requires multiple scene splits to re-time each section. the cat drinking water at the end ... that was broken into 2-lick sequences (lick, lick, split - lick, lick, split ... and so on) and each split scene was either sped up or slowed down to sync with the next down beat in the song so it looks like the kitty is licking to the beat of the song (fun stuff).
if i can get my thoughts together enough on this i will seriously consider putting my method into writing - it's really easy to do

First time I viewed the video I was at work - no sound card - and so wondered what all the 'puss' was about.
I soon discovered when I got home and watched it again - this time with sound.
WOW, Purrrfect.
There have been several requests from forum members about how to synchronise the audio and video, if you can put it into a tutorial it will be very popular.
Well done.

I will do my best to make the time for this in the coming days/weeks. It's on my calendar nowsjj1805 wrote:...There have been several requests from forum members about how to synchronise the audio and video, if you can put it into a tutorial it will be very popular.
Again - thanks for all of the kind words. While by no means a cinema masterpiece - it was a fun video to put together. As I am writing this - my cats are killing each other not 10 feet in front of my desk. Will the good video footage never end?
