Using VS10+
When I capture video from my HD camcorder using the ULead HD Plugin the saved file is output as an .MPG file. Properties within Windows Media Player show the size as 1920x1080 not at 1440x1080.
Question--Is this MPG file encoded the same as an .M2T file?
Thanks in advance!

Since you mention using a plugin, I assume that you are using Video Studio 9.0.
It would be very strange if it captured the HC2's video as 1920x1080. It should be Mpeg2 HDV, 1440x1080i, Field order=Upper Field First, video bitrate=25,000Kbps, etc.
Video files with the .m2t extension are called Mpeg2 Transport Stream. The video bitstream is broken up into small packets of data, with error detection/correction bits that assist in the error-free transmission of the video over lossy transmission lines. Many video editors and playback software could not handle m2t, which made it a PITA to work with.
This baggage gets stripped off by Video Studio during capture, leaving the Mpeg2 Program stream. These files have the extension ".mpg", which is what you want for editing and playback.

As John states the video is mpeg2 1440X1080i with the transport stream baggage stripped off, which is called a program stream.
With VS10+ when you produce a video to write back to the camera it will be rerendered to include the transport stream information. Even though the file is a .m2t file Ulead keeps the .mpg file name.
In MSP8 the output file has a file extension of .m2t.

Still confused...Does VS10+ capture the raw m2t stream?
I'm still confused...Can VS10+ capture the raw m2t stream from my HDR-HC1 camera?
Here is what I have further done.
I output the captured file within VS10+ by clicking the share Tab and selecting HDV Recording -> HDV 1080i-60i(Transport Stream)
The file output was clearly 1440x1080 as viewed in WinDVD7 on my laptop with screen resolution of 1920x1080 (in otherwords there was a black border around the video). When I viewed the initial captured footage from the camcorder in WinDVD7 it filled the entire screen thus confirming it being 1920x1080.
SO, what I really want to figure out is:
a) if VS10+ can capture the raw m2t stream without conversion.
b) if VS10+ can edit raw m2t files
Thanks in advance!

The fact that WinDVD filled your screen is immaterial. That is not the way to measure video properties.
The best way to measure the properties of your capture files is to drop one of them into Video Studio's Edit timeline, click "yes" when it asks if you want to set the Project Properties to match. Then read the Project properties in the "Edit" menu.
a) NO
b) NO
