Everything is all set........I'm just saving my projects as an mpeg2. I originally captured my video as an .avi, so I guess that's what the problem was.

My only issue is still with the music part of the final DVD, but I've explained that extensively in another thread. I can't believe only one other guy has noticed the music to be muffled on the final DVD. It sorely takes away from the final project.

Mike,
In video editing, video and audio properties are everything. If your properties are screwed up, just about anything can happen in Video Studio.

These are the property settings that I use for Video file creation and DVD Burning. I get great pictures and terrific sound:

Mpeg Properties (NTSC only):
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First {if analog use "Upper Field First"}
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Thanks for the detail. Do you get that terrific sound on a regular DVD player hooked to your tv? Because I do get great sound on my computer DVD player, it's the regular DVD player giving me trouble. I'll check to see if my settings match what you've provided. Thanks.

Mike,
I get great sound on a DVD player hooked up to an entertainment system with a high def TV and a sound system. I have played the DVD on other people's TV and it sounds great there, also.

Do you drop a .wav track into the music timeline? And Do you alter the audio filter in any way?

Mike,
I have dropped .WMA, .MP3, .WAV into the music timeline. They all work.

Iron Mike
I have just read this thread regarding your problems.

I note that you create video file to Mpeg 2.
Using this option my version of Vs 8 defaults to:-

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
(MPEG-2), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 44.1 KHz, Joint stereo

As you can see Frame Based is selected and audio layer 2, 44.1 KHz, Joint stereo

Not what you want.!!!!!!!!!!!!
For a Dvd you need a Field based upper or lower, and 48 KHz, Stereo not 44.1

If you select Pal or Ntsc DVD the template you get is :-

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo

I change the audio to MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo. Instead of Lpcm.
And use CBR. (personal preference)

Gave a list earlier, Make sure your settings match his recommendations for ntsc.
If you captured to Dv-Avi then use Johns settings to create video file and burn dvd.

The recommended procedure does work but you have to ensure that the final burn properties have been used throughout the Mpeg process.
Once you have converted from Avi or captured to Mpeg keep the same settings to the end. ( unfortunately you have to get them correct to start with).

When the settings are ok you can use 'same as project'

Read my quick guide below

Hope this Helps

IronMike778;

Your problem with the music, you might check the volume from your sound card, master volume and WAV, try reducing the volume in your mixer especially if it is set at max volume.

I have been able to eliminate the distorted audio problem in my setup this way as well.

Asus a7n8x mobo with 5.1 surround sound built in
amd 2600+ xp cpu over clocked to 3000+
256 mbyte 333 ddr mem
asus v9180 td 8x agp video card
120 gb hd
myhd high definition tuner card

hope this helps

Can't thank you all enough for your consistent replies to my issue. I made a tweak to the disc template of the burn process that may be a cure. However, after about 90% of the burn process I got a "Failed In Performing Power Calibration" error.......what the hell is that? I've burned about 10 DVD's and 10 CD's and I'm just getting this now?

Mike,
Without any details of your burner or video/project properties it is extremely difficult to help you with this problem.

I googled on "Power Calibration Error" and got lots of hits for different brands of DVD player. One general message was: "A “Power Calibration Error” can be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer. It is also attributed to the use of a poor quality media."

Have you changed DVD media? What brand do you use?

I've been using memorex dvd's with no problems through about 10 DVD burns. Maybe this was just a fluke thing.....I'll be trying again shortly.......will post back if it happens again. The only thing I did different on the last burn was change some of the audio properties in the Disc Template part of the pre-burn. Maybe that had something to do with it.

Mike,
It would really help if you would post your:
(1) Capture Properties (right mouse on a video clip and select properties)
(2) Project Properties (Menu File/Project Properties contents of lower window)
(3) Burn Properties (what you set up with the little gear-shaped icon in the lower left of the Create Disc window).

Ok, a new twist to my problem. I just brought a copy of my "perfect" mpeg movie to someone else's computer and it was a complete disaster!! As it turns out, my movie was NOT fine as an mpeg but subpar as a DVD. You see, I have 4 speakers and a subwoofer hooked up to my computer.......that's why it sounded ok!!! When I played it another computer that had only 2 speakers it was HORRIBLE!! The music was so distorted from loudness it's not even funny. So, it seems it only sounded muffled on my DVD player because it was burned that way......I didn't recognize the problem because my 4-speaker setup distributed the sound.

So, what do I do???!? Why am I the only one having SO MUCH trouble with the music/audio part of my movie??? I am beyond frustrated. Here are the settings I've got going:

Song Properties-

Wav format
Audio Compression - PCM
Attributes - 44 khz, 16 bit, stereo

Project Properties-

Audio Settings - LPCM

(Audio type and frequency are faded and can't be changed in anyway.
