Problem: DVD burning requires too much harddrive memory

Post by baedaebok »

Why does DVD burning software require so much harddrive memory for their "working files"? I'm trying to burn a 4.19GB video project (using Ulead's Movie Factory 5.0 Plus) and the working files want to take up 8.32GB of harddrive memory. But I only have 3.54GB left b/c the rest of the memory is being taken up by MPEG video files. I edited down 6 DV tapes worth of files to make 1:15 hour video project. Now the program is insisting on using up so much harddrive space. I'm missing about 5GB. I could knock off a bunch of programs from C: drive but that sounds ominous. Who knows if I could reinstall them!

Is there anyway around this? Can I make the program take much longer to do the job but use less harddrive memory?

I don't know exactly why, but it does seem to use twice the final disc space for temporary files. So, you should really have about 10GB free before rendering/burning.

You are "cutting it close", and you really need a bigger, or 2nd hard drive. Sorry. :( An "easy" option is an external USB drive. An internal drive would cost less overall, an would cost less per-gigabyte

I would not recommend deleting any applications unless you are not planning to use them any more.

Try Disc Cleanup, try emptying your recycle bin, and if you have any old A/V files, delete them.

-- EDIT --
Here's another idea...
If you have six full DV files on your drive (13GB per hour)...

Download the trial version of Video Studio. Edit your AVI/DV files first, and just save the shorter, edited, version(s) in DV format. (The space saved should allow plenty of room for Video Studio.)

For example, two hours of DV will take-up less than 30 GB, and that should leave enough "working space".

baedaebok, it'd be nice if I could click your Image button and see how much total HD space you have instead of having to ask: how much total HD space do you have?

If you click my Image button, you'll see that I have 80GB internal and 200GB external. Before I started editing video, the 80GB internal was plenty, but as soon as I started working with video files, it was obvious that that was way too little. So I went out and bought the 200GB external - and there are times I wish I had more.

Deleting unused files and emptying your Recycle Bin are unlikely to get you a significant percentage of what you require. As DVDDoug says, another (big!) drive is really the only practical solution. They're not really expensive now - I've seen good quality (LaCie) 500GB (!) external drives advertised for $US185.

Any video editng suite will need plenty of HDD space to store temp and working files.

Mpeg encoding is very intensive computing and requires a lot of space. As a rule of thumb you can say that you need twice the source file space in addition for the working files. Don't forget, the system will also need space for the swap file.

I have no such problems and if you click on my "System" button below, you will see why.

Borrowed HDD

I borrowed a trusting friends external HDD and I burnt the DVDs of my daughter in her first two years of life. I'm done with editing for awhile (until two years later when she turns 4).

That's nice that your friend was able to provide you with that. I've been undertaking a similar task for my granddaughter. She's 7 now and this started about 5 yrs ago, with photos, and video. It's getting to be quite a large project. I'm hoping to continue through her graduations (if I'm still around)...:)

I agree with Heinz, that more HDDs are needed, I still need more. ;)
