Where are my chapters?

Post by WestbrookNH »

I created a project in VS10+ and inserted chapter points.

Then I rendered the project into an MPEG-2 file.

I started a new project to burn a disk and inserted the MPEG-2 into the new project. I went to Share->CreateDisk, but it appears that none of my chapter points were preserved.

I thought you could render a project into an MPEG-2 file and preserve your chapters. Is that not so?

Have you applied the patch? Apparently the original version of VS10 had a bug that didn't carry over the chapter points created in the editing stage when you follow the Recommended Procedure of creating an mpeg before burning. I believe the patch has fixed that.

Yes, I applied the patch.

But no chapters.

Is there a way to know if the patch took effect?

Thanks, Black Lab.

My about window says 10.0.0110.2, so I guess the patch is installed.

But no chapters.

If you look on Ulead's update site (http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm) there are 3 updates. That's what one of the links I sent you was referring to. Which one do you have? I haven't installed any of the updates, so I don't think I can be of any further help. Sorry.

But it's only useful if you have Vista installed.

No, the one WestbrookNH has selected is the correct one, and it is not related to Vista at all...

Thanks for the affirmation, Ken.

As it turns out, I just rendered the project from the Share->CreateDisk utility and skipped creating the MPEG-2 file. All my chapters were imported into Share->CreateDisk when VS10+ autimatically inserted the .VSP file.

After finding my authoring templates :), I rendered the project, created a .ISO file, and burned the disk all in one step.

Thank you one and all.

Did you move or rename the mpeg2 file :?:

In the Create Disc module, did you hit the "Auto Add Chapters" icon, and then use Insert scenes as chapters :?:

I did not move or rename the MPEG-2 file and "Auto Add Chapters" checkbox was greyed-out.

Given my history, I'm sure it was some kind of user error, but I was able to get what I wanted, so I'm fat and happy now.

The Answer from ULEAD

Post by WestbrookNH »

Here is ULEAD's response to my question.
Chapter points information and other work done in disc authoring stage are only stored in VideoStudio project file and not in the Mpeg files. If you want to retrieved your work done in VS 10's disc authoring program, then you have to open the related project file.
So chapter points ARE NOT preserved when rendering into MPEG-2.

This means we must let the CreateDisk Utility do the rendering.

I've done that, and I'm happy with the results, so we can consider this matter closed.

I think there is a communication gap here. Notice their reply mentions the "Disc Authoring stage" -- I don't think that is the same as the VideoStudio Editing stage -- where you can render the mpeg file, and it will have the chapter points you added to the Edit Timeline (the little orange triangles above your timeline). Actually, I believe the chapters are stored in a file with the same name, but different extension - "upd" -- that is why I asked you if the file was renamed or moved.

Bottom line is this -- using VS10+ with latest SP1 installed, if I render my VideoStudio timeline (that has some little orange triangles above the timeline to indicate chapter points) to a DVD Mpeg (or mpeg2), I can then open up the Disc Authoring module, insert that rendered mpeg file, and auto-add those scenes as chapters.

George
