Help for a new user - capturing images

Post by Joms »

Hi. I haven't had time to read through the multiple posts, where I am sure the answer to this is, but I am in a hurry. I am hoping you will forgive my amatuerish question also.
I have Videosuite 8, on a LG LS50a Laptop. I used an IEEE-1394 cable to connect a DVD camcorder (can't remember the brand as it was borrowed form work) to capture digital images, splitting scenes. I did change the property settings on my lappy as per Instruction manual.
The images that have been captured are jerky and skipping. It is very disconcerting to watch.
What have I done wrong? What can I do to improve the capture?

Are you sure you captured by firewire (IEEE1394) from a DVD camera ?? - not USB ???

In any case the way to transfer from a DVD camera is to take the DVD out of the camera - put it in the DVD tray of your computer - and use the "Insert DVD/DVD-VR... " option within VideoStudio to transfer direct from the DVD.

also if you could fill in the System specs in your profile it will help us diagnose your problem.

Hi Brian,

yes I did indeed use a firewire - bought it specially for this task.

Sorry to misrepresent - The digicamcorder I was using was not DVD, it was DV-digicam, so the video was recorded onto a digital video cassette. (I have recently bought myself a DVD-digicam to see if this is better).
What specifications do you need to know? I'm sorry I didn't fill anything in on my profile, but I am under a timeline - the boss wants the DVD presented by end of this week and I am feeling a bit time pressured.

ps - thanks for the hint on the dvd transfer...

In the Video Studio capture screen, click on the Options cogwheel icon. If the program is set to capture DV format, then this Options box will probably show that it is set by default to capture using Type 2 DV encoder. Change that to Type 1 and you will probably find you will get a smooth capture this time.

A lot of people have difficulty with the (default) Type 2 encoder. And Type 2 video (which VS can read and edit if captured properly), is only really required by the more professional end of the market. Type 2 DV, if captured by a computer which has insufficient resources for the job, typically displays jerky video and/or audio.

And, while you are looking at the settings, check that your project is set to use lower field first.
