The Convert-X (capture device) specifies USB 2.0 but when I try to use my Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA adapter in my HP laptop, I get no preview in the preview window (and I assume no video is being captured.) The preview window works just fine when the Convert-X goes to the computer's USB 1.1 port. (OK with VS 8 or Win DVD Creator- I have both!)
The Belkin must be causing this. Will any 1.1 to 2.0 USB pcmcia card do the same thing? Or is there a brand that is known to work?
Thanks!
Frank
No preview with VS 8, Belkin 2.0 USB Adapter. and Convert-X

I have a similar problem with the PCMCIA USB 2.0 4 port card in my own laptop. It works with some devices, but not with others. I think it has something to do with the power requirements of the device being plugged into it.
Do both the Connect-X and Belkin devices come with their own power adapters? And if so, are they both plugged into a power supply?
I also understand that some USB 2 PCMCIA cards come with a small power jack built into them, but usually don't come with the corresponding power adapter. I assume that this is to allow a separate power supply to devices you plug into the card which require independent power or more than can be supplied from the computer's power supply through the card. However, I have never seen this in action, so don't know how, or even if, it works...

Hi Ken-
I ended up with the Belkin because it uses its own power supply,
which is included. I had terrible troubles with any of the others that relied on the computer's supply, but that was mostly a freeze issue. I also realize that some have a jack for an external supply but don't come with one.
The ConvertX has its own supply as well.
This is indeed a strange problem but I do hope to find an answer eventually. Also I'm not ruling out the possibility that current drain may
still be at the root of the issue. Obviously I want to avoid getting a new laptop.
Whereas the ConvertX specifies USB 2.0 you *can* use 1.1, but there is some tendency to pixillate occasionally. That's what I'm doing at the moment.
Thanks for your interest! Hope to hear again.

Will it have this issue when you use the capture software (if any) came with the USB capture card?
If you change to use another USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, will it solve the issue?
Some USB controller chip on the PCMCIA card will have compatibility issues when running in USB 2.0 mode, and you might need to replace the card until it works.
But if the capture software that came with Convert-X works in USB 2.0 mode with the card, then it's another story....

Solved!
The problem was traced to a bad driver for the Belkin. Thanks for help!
