Longer cross fades, fade-ins and fade outs

Post by Gerald Edmundson »

I am new to Video Studio 10, so this may be common knowledge. But I can not find a way to made cross fades (and fade-ins and fade-outs) longer. That is: the time from when the fade starts to the end of the fade. I want a really a long gradual fade-in and a long gradual fade out, so is there to adjust this? (I have used Pinnacle Studio 9 in the past. It was a simple task with this program.)

Thanks a bunch!

From the main VS10+ screen, select the Edit tab.

Then select the item on the timeline to which you want to apply the fade or zoom.

Look for the "Pan and Zoom" checkbox. It should be right under the "Keep Aspect Ratio" checkbox.

Select the "Pan and Zoom" checkbox, and select the effect closest to the one you want from the dropdown list. You will see a bunch of cubes in motion in the dropdown list that characterize the Pan/Zoom effect.

After you select the effect closest to what you want, exit the list box and press the "Customize" button right next to "Pan and Zoom".

From the Customize property sheet, you can do almost anything you want.

If you are referring to transitions, click on the transition in your timeline to highlight it. Now drag the yellow trim handles. You can also adjust the duration by entering a time value in the Duration box. Default transition durations can be set under File>Preferences>Edit tab>Default Transition Effect Duration.

See page 79 of the manual (link below) for more details.

I am referring to title fade-ins, fade-outs and cross fades to adjust the length of time of the gradual fades - from the beginning of the fade until it reaches (or leaves) the "still" title. I want to lengthen the time of the gradual fades themselves, not just the time of the whole title (by clicking and dragging.)

Sorry, this is a little confusing for a novice.

Thanks,
Gerald

WestbrookNH and Balck Tab,

Thank you for the speedy replies and the answers. I appreciate it!

But this help does not apply to titles as far as I can tell. I have no problem with transition timing. It is the gradual lengthening of the time of the gradual fades, in and out of titles that is the problem. The auto fade with the descending and ascending bars options are a little fast for what I what to do. Again, sorry I cannot explain this very well.

Thanks again,
Gerald

Hi Gerald

This is the first time you mentioned Titles, a whole new ball game.

I have not much time at the moment,

1 / But from the title animation click the screen to highlight the text, then click the two¡¦TT¡¦s ¡¥ for more options.

2 / Drag the blue trim bars below the preview screen to alter the Pause Duration

Sorry got to rush

The ascending and descending bars set the fade in and out for the audio - not the video.

you can set defaults for the fade in/out and transitions duration by going to "File >> Preferences" and setting them under the 'Edit' tab.

Hi Gerald,

If you are trying to adjust fade-in, fade-out and pause duration for your titles, as I think you are based on your latest clarifying post, then Trevor has the applicable answer for you. All of the other answers work for those other applications, whether it be video clips or transitions. You are right, the auto fade-in and auto fade-out buttons (the ones with the ascending and descending vertical bars) are only a preset. The black trim handles and blue horizontal bar under the Preview Window is where you would adjust these time frames. I think Brian Cee misunderstood your "auto" for "audio".

:D :D
