You cannot expect a sensible answer with no further information than you have provided. We need to know what your computer set-up is, what you are trying to capture from (digital video camera? analogue? VCR?) How is it connected to your computer? And most importantly, exactly what version of Video Studio are you using?

Sorry, I have a digital video camcorder. It's a Panasonic GS-12. It's connected to my computer by a USB 2.0 cable. I have VS SE 8 and MovieFactory 3.5 I encounter the same problems in both programs. Thanks for the help.

I would venture that your USB connection is keeping you from capturing at a higher resolution. USB is too slow to capture at 720 x 480, it couldn't keep up. Firewire is the way to go, or even S-Video.
