10 trial version crashes on the Capture screen

Post by runlikecrazycat »

I am trying to capture video from my webcam (it is a Logitech QuickCam Pro 4 connected via USB port). I am able to do so with Windows Movie Maker (WMM) and with the Logitech QuickCam software. However, since I wanted a fancier video capture and editing program, I downloaded and installed the trial version of Ulead VideoStudio 10.

After the install, the default format on the Capture screen was AVI; I changed it to WMV (because that is the format WMM uses, and I wanted to be able to compare the quality of the captured video from both programs). I was able to capture a short clip, and I was able to play around, testing adding various effects to the clip.

The next day, I opened VideoStudio, and was looking through the capture options. I changed the format to MPEG and browsed through its capture options. I did not actually try to capture a clip with the format set to MPEG. Then I changed the format back to WMV. At this point, the program crashed.

After that, every time after restarting VideoStudio, when I clicked on the Capture tab, the program crashed.

Finally, I uninstalled VideoStudio, removed the Application Data folder, and reinstalled it. Since I was curious if the problem would reoccur, I tried to re-create it. I've listed my notes from that at the end of this message.

The crux of my issue seems to be that when I change the format to WMV, then to MPEG, and back to WMV, the program starts crashing so that I am not able to even initiate doing a capture anymore. I am also not sure why the "Change Field Order" popup keeps being displayed, and if that is part of the problem or not.

It looks like I am going to have to try out a different program since Ulead crashes on me. But I am curious whether this is a general problem with Ulead that happens for other people too when they follow the same steps, or not.

Notes
(the parts where I click on the Edit tab and then the Capture tab were to see if it would crash or not when doing that)

Reinstalled Ulead.
Now, it doesn't trap when I open the Capture tab.

After clicking the Video Capture link, it shows a "Change Field Order" dialog. I clicked Cancel button.

Default settings for capture are:
Source: Logitech QuickCam Pro 4
Format: AVI

Captured a short AVI clip, then played it back.
Clicked the Edit tab.
Clicked the Capture tab, and then the Capture Video link.
Shows "Change Field Order" (CFO) dialog. I clicked Cancel button.
Changed format to WMV.
Captured a short WMV clip, then played it back.
Clicked the Edit tab.
Clicked the Capture tab, and then the Capture Video link.
CFO dialog was not shown this time.
Looked at Video & Audio Capture Property settings from Options menu - it is set to 768 Kbps. Cancelled out.
Clicked the Edit tab.
Clicked the Capture tab, and then the Capture Video link.
Changed format to MPEG.
Shows "Change Field Order" (CFO) dialog. I clicked Cancel button.
Looked at Video & Audio Capture Property settings from Options menu.
Cancelled out.
Changed format to WMV.
Looked at Video & Audio Capture Property settings from Options menu
... it crashed.

Restarted Ulead.
Got message box "Do you want to recover the previous project file"?
Clicked Yes.
Clicked the Capture tab, and then the Capture Video link.
... it crashed.

Restarted Ulead.
Got message box "Do you want to recover the previous project file"?
Clicked No.
Clicked the Capture tab, and then the Capture Video link.
... it crashed.

Copied the original version of hercap.ini that was there after the install to the Application Data folder (after the 2nd install, I had made a backup copy of the Application Data folder).

Restarted Ulead.
Clicked the Capture tab, and then the Capture Video link.
Shows "Change Field Order" (CFO) dialog. I clicked Cancel button.
Changed format from AVI to WMV.
... it crashed.

The easy way is most often the best way.
I view the capture module of VideoStudio or any other similar program is simply an item to make the program an all rounder.

If you can capture with something else do so.
I tend to use WinTV2000 to capture TV from my TV card
I tend to use MediaStudio Pro to capture from my camcorder.

Use whatever means you have available to capture the video to your hard drive and then open that file for editing with VideoStudio.

The best software to capture video is normally that which came with the device. It will have been specifically tweaked for use with that device rather than attempting to use a general purpose 'all rounder' capturing solution.
