Video Studio 10 - How to set process priority?

Post by bits »

I am evaluating VS10 Plus and so far I think it is a big improvement over VS8. The one issue I have so far is that when creating a video file (endcoding) it seems to run the process at a high priority. I know that encoding is CPU intensive but most of my other encoding apps have selectable process priorities. This is an issue because I use my computer as a PVR and to stream video to my networked media players. VS10 is the only encoding app that will actually cause the video stream to stutter and stop. Apps like Dr DivX, WinFF, comskip, DivX Author, HDTVtoDVD ect...which all peg the cpu do not interupt my video streaming over my wired network.

Does VS10 have the ability to set processing priority? and if so, where is it located?

Task Manager -> Processes ->"Highlight the executable process" & right-click on it -Select "Set Priority" to xxxxx.

Also when right clicking on the process one can assign the number of processors by selecting "Set Affinity".

When I use a windows machine to stream in the background I also make the following changes:
"My Computers System Properties" -> "Advanced" -> "Performance Settings" -> "Advanced", then under "Processor Scheduling" change the setting from "Programs to "Background services", sometimes helps but Native XP isn't true multi-tasking (which is good for capturing realtime video or fast rendering of encoded video/audio).

Or, change the video servers priority to realtime.
A Linux box is better for streaming video on your local lan, true multi-tasking.
Thanks for the suggestions. I am quite familiar with setting priorities via the task manager but as I have stated....I run many cpu intensive programs without issue because they either automatically run at low priority or it can be set in a GUI.

I have been streaming video to my LP2 for about 18months with absolutely no issues, specifically in instances when I am running multiple processes including encoding, commercial detection and QSF on ts files. The only software app that causes the streaming to stutter and stop is VS.

My setup is a P4 2.53 running XP Home SP2. I am planning on building a Dual Core AMD system with 64bit XP Pro in the next 6-10months but it would be nice if I could use VS now. Just seems like a serious oversight on their part.

I setup and run the linux server provided by guru's in Japan for the LP2. It also runs nice under Linux. Doesn't do real-time conversion, just serve and farm out the videos. The windows server software also works ok.

Pretty neat your doing all that on a 2.53 cpu & windows.

Sorry my post couldn't help, maybe someone else could use the info.
Maybe something has changed in either my network or my computer because I was just using DrDivx and it caused the video to stutter. Possible something is going south with my LP2. Oh well....I now know that it is not VS10! Maybe I should move my time table up for the Dual Core?

Wish I knew more about Linux...it would be great to be free of Windows!
