Chapters - VS10+ vs. Movie Maker

Post by kjfrey1701 »

I've tried what seems like every way possible to Sunday to have chapter marks recognized in VS10+ when I'm in the Share > Create Disk > Add/Edit Chapters > Auto Add Chapters feature to no avail. Here's what I tried:

1. Captured video to mpeg-2 file
2. Added the file to a new project storyboard
3. Created chapters by starting with the raw file and:
a) Inserting chapter marks in the timeline view and creating a video file (T001)
b) Taking the raw file file above and splitting the single clip into several clips and creating a video file both with chapter at the start of each clip and without (T002 and T003)
c) Taking file T001 and splitting it with Split by Scene, adding transitions between the clips and creating a video file (T004)
4. Closed the project file and started a new one
5. Clicked Share > Create Disk > Add/Edit Chapters > Auto Add Chapters and got "No chapter detected" for each file above.

Am I missing something? I can use the VSP file, but that takes a LOT longer to create the DVD folders.

Movie Maker 5 on the other hand had no problem recognizing the chapters on all the files. Is it maybe doing something automatically in the background that can be done manually (through a setting change) in VS10+ or just not possible?

It seems to me that your step 3 is out of context in a couple of senses. First, you simply should not use the insert Chapter marks at a stage before you chop that video file up.

Second, if you are using VS10+, have you applied the update patch? If not, then with your work flow (which I realise is our recommended one) will never recognise the Chapter marks regardless of whether you chopped up the original video after you inserted them or not.

Patchless, VS10 will not retain the chapter marks if you first convert your project to a DVD-compliant mpeg-2. The only way it would was to ignore the recommended procedure and, after you finished your edits, jump the recommended step of first producing the mpeg-2. Instead, with the project still in the timeline, you go straight to Share > Create Disc.

The alternative is to apply the patch. (I haven't.) Apparently, you can then follow the recommended work flow, and the inserted Chapter points will be recognised when you eventually make it to the burning module after first producing an mpeg-2. You can also amend the inserted chapter points, and add more if you want.

@Ken
I think you mis-read the steps the OP took. Step-3 consists of different methods to create test files (T001, T002, T003, T004).

@kjfrey1701
It might be as Ken suggested -- installing SP1 did fix some things with chapter recognition in the Create Disc module...

Excellent gentlemen! Applying the SP1 did solve the problem, at least for file created in step 3a - T001. I'm running out and will test the others later.

Ken - Congrats on your milestone of 3000 posts (you're not slowing down I see) and thanks for the help you've provided me the past few weeks.

As for step 3a, some of the work I'm doing only involves a simple break-up of the captured file in to chapters for being able to skip around while viewing without having to view sequentially or use fast forward/reverse. I assume that chopping the file up is mainly if you want to add transitions between the pieces, yes?

George W - thanks for your observation, I was indeed creating separate files to try and cover all the scenarios where one might want to end up with chapters in their DVD.

Best regards,

Ken
