Using DV Quickscan at "Maximum Speed"

Post by XiRoCCo »

Hi

I'm using VS10 to capture my Mini DV footage. I use the DV Quickscan to scan the scenes - then select the ones I want and capture them to my PC.

Is there any harm in scanning the tape at Maximum Speed, as opposed to the other two options of 1X or 2X? I want to make sure I'm not damaging my tapes in any way.

Thanks!

Theoretically no you should not harm your tape. However there is the chance of stretching the tape from too much of this type of use. The quick scan is just like using the Forward or Reverse Search on your camcorder or a VCR, where instead of Fast-Forwarding, you leave the playhead engaged and press Fast-Forward.

I can recall when VCRs added a slowing to the rewinding of the tape as it neared the end. This was to help keep from stretching it.

thanks vidoman - yeah, my camera slows the tape down at about a minute (of tape) prior to reaching the end. I figured there may be some fatigue because the heads were in contact with the tape during a quick scan - but i typically only use a tape once (maybe twice) and capture much of it at one time.

thanks :)
