I transferred some footage from my DV camcorder to VS10+. I then changed the name of the video file. Then I performed Split by Scene after this, but all of the individual scene clips have the exact same file name. There are no sequential numbers given to each individual clip to identify them. Is there a way to have VS10+ assign sequential numbering of scene files when doing a Split by Scene after a transfer has been done?
The reason I'm asking is that I only want to change the name of my captured files once. If I do a Split by Scene while capturing, then I have to rename all of the individual scene clips (although they would already be sequentially numbered).
Thanks for your help.

AFAIK, if you used Video Studio to do your scene split, there is only one file. The scene clips that you see are virtual - simply pointers to sections of the real file. So if you change the file name, using Windows Explorer, for example, all the splits should follow suit - but you will have to relink any project file that is started.

Thanks, John.
That's what I thought. So its either split by scene after transfer and be satisfied with all scene clips having the exact same file name or split by scene while transferring and take the time to change the name of all individual scene clips.

However, you can assign a unique "name" to the icon for each split clip in the library.
Edit: I just tried this and found that after scene split, the splits are not automatically placed in the library, so you have to select them all in the timline and drag them up to the library, where you can change the tag that is visible below the icon.

Thanks, John.
I was hoping to avoid renaming all 30 to 35 scene clips individually from my one captured file. Thanks, anyway.
Edit: I did my Split by Scene by right clicking on the main captured file icon in the Library, and when the scene splitting was done, all 30 scene clips appeared in my Library and not in my timeline. Just the opposite of the results you got. Interesting.

There are many utilities to rename files in a directory. Ulead's PhotoExplorer can do this easily.
Here's another free renamer I use:
File Renamer Utility

You can Split by Scene from the library or the timeline.
The resulting vertual clips being placed in the start location.

Hi Brian
Renaming clips cannot be done from the split by scene virtual clips, there source is one file on the hard drive.
If you wish to rename files on your hard drive then XP can do that for you.
Simply select the files in a folder, then right click the first selected file and re-name, all the remaining files will follow sequence.
To be honest I think you are making work for yourself.
Once you have re-named clips you may be tempted to insert the files to a new project, rather than re-linking to the original project.
Be aware that VS 10 may not keep the clips in order.
