Split clips don't play properly

I'm splitting a windows media video clip using the simple slider and "cut clip based on jog position......" scissors.

Sometimes I cannot play the 2nd half of the split clip. IE: If I select the first piece of the split clip and press play, it plays fine. If I select the second piece and press play, the preview screen goes black and the button turns to "pause" but nothing plays. I do not want to play in project selected as the times are not useful.

This worked on my previous older laptop. But now on a HP Dv6000 it doesn't. Same clips. Anyone know what I'm missing?
