The simplest method is to go to the first frame of an ad break and hit 'split video' (about midway up the left hand side of your screen), now go to the first frame after the ad break and hit split video again. This should give you three clips in your time line, before the ads, the ads, and after the ads. Select the ads and right click>delete. Rinse and repeat.
peace.
PS. You may well know already, but VS6 is very, very outdated. It can perform simple tasks, with common video types, but if you plan to venture further into this video editing caper, I would consider upgrading to a newer version. Having said that, i still use VS6 SE DVD for VHS captures as it has been tweaked to work with my capture device whereas the new version VS10+ has not. When it comes to the editing and authoring phase though VS10+ leaves 6 in the dust.
I have NEVER used VS6 for authoring so I'll have to have a play and get back to you later. It is very simple in later versions though so I imagine VS6 is much the same.
But try switching from Project playback to Clip playback
Not sure which option you should use but would imaging Clip mode.
Then select the frame you wish to make the first cut/split
It's a long time since I used version 6 - but in the earlier versions you actually had to click on the video in the timeline to select it before commands like 'split video' became available to you.
Have you thought about upgrading - version 10 is a whole new world compared with V6
Thanks Trevor, but AFAIK VS6 doesn¡¦t have clip and project modes like the later versions do. I really only use it for capturing so I¡¦m not 100% sure, but I¡¦ve had a good hunt around the UI and can¡¦t find anything of that nature.
M&N ¡V The only time I can get the split video icon to grey out is if I am at the start or end of a clip, or as Brian said if I don¡¦t have any clips selected it isn¡¦t there at all. Double check to make sure you¡¦re not just at the start or end of a clip and make sure you are in the story board tab at the top. Short of restarting with a new project and crossed fingers, I¡¦m not sure what else to suggest after that, but I¡¦ll keep playing around with it and see if I can come up with anything.
As for your earlier question about chapter points, this is done at the authoring stage in the "Ulead DVD Plug-in", which you get to by going to the Finish tab, selecting ¡¥Create DVD¡¨, and rendering your finished DVD compliant MPEG. Once this is done it will open the plug-in automatically. Or if you have already rendered your finished video, open a new project, go to the storyboard tab and select your video in the library pane, then click Export > Ulead DVD Wizard on the left of screen.
On the first screen select DVD (if you even have an option, it seems as though it may choose for itself based on the file properties), hit next. This is where you add your chapter points. You¡¦ll see in the right hand pane you have one thumbnail, this represents chapter 1 or the start of your video. Make sure the ¡¥detect scene frames¡¦ box is ticked, then scrub through your clip till you get to where you want each chapter point to go and hit ¡¥add¡¦. Each time you hit ¡¥add¡¦ you should see a new thumbnail appear in the pane on the right.
Once you¡¦re done marking your chapter points, you can go to the menu set up stage by hitting next., or if you want to insert introduction media tick that box first. If you¡¦re inserting introduction media, the next page will let you browse for the file you wish to add. If not, you will be presented with a menu page where you can choose your menu layout and background image etc.
Once you¡¦re happy hit next again and you¡¦ll be presented with a little preview screen and remote control so you can see how it will look in the end. Don¡¦t pay too much attention to this, in later versions it is very good, but in VS6 it is terrible, not like how your final DVD will behave at all.. The next two screens will let you set up which drive you wish to burn with, where you want the ¡¥working¡¦ files to go, and whether you want to create DVD Folders or a disc image for burning multiple copies later. That¡¦s it, hit the ¡¥Create DVD¡¦ button and burn away!
I should point out that I couldn¡¦t find a way to have a ¡¥main menu¡¦ and a ¡¥chapter menu¡¦ like you see on most DVDs. All I could get was a chapter menu. Whether this is a limitation of VS6 SE DVD (as opposed to the full version) or whether it was normal for all versions of VS6 I don¡¦t know, but as I said earlier, VS10+ leaves this for dead, and I¡¦m even more sure of that now than I was before.
I have looked at VS 5 and the preview screen seems to be similar to VS 6, in that it has two preview scroll bars to the bottom. (Trim Bars) Haven¡¦t worked out the difference between the two as yet.
As mentioned the split/ cut video becomes available if you play the clip.
Otherwise
Select / Highlight your clip in the timeline, so that the yellow trim bars are seen.
Drag the lower scroll bar (under the preview screen) to select the cut point.
You should also be able to trim/cut the clip in the library, then drag the cut section to the timeline.
