I have to be able to edit, exit, and come back to editing.
It seems that VS10+ does not save much beyond the basic information on the timeline between sessions.
I had put about 2 hours into a slide show with pans and zooms, then I had to direct my attention to something else.
I saved the project and exited VS10+, but the next day, when I reopened project, all the zoom and fade effects were gone.
I had the same experience getting part way through building a menu for a DVD burn. Didn't have enough time to finish it, so I saved the project and exited. But when I came back a day or so later and reopened the project, all my work on the menus was gone.
Am I missing something, or do you have to do these things in one sitting?

How to preserve effects and menus between sessions?

When you enter the authoring stage and create your menus there is a misleading message upon exit that tells you it is saving your project.
Alas it does not. What you must do is this.
1. Before entering the Menu Authoring stage save your project giving it a meaningful name.
2. When you exit the Menu authoring stage ignore the misleading message that it is saving your project, now manually save the project.
When you later re-open that project and enter the authoring stage you will find all of work in the authoring stage is intact.

Not with VideoStudio, You can with MediaStudio.
The next best thing is to follow the hints in this post:
Re-Linking-Replacing slide show images.

Thanks again, Steve.
Your answer was less than I had hoped for, but better than I expected.

Having had some experience with woodworking and quite a bit of software development, I can appreciate the art of the workaround.
P.S.
I read your post about "The Year of Sharing", and perhaps even this Newbie can come up with something to share.
