Problem importing a certain part of footage

Post by laurenacsv »

Problem number two.....

i imported all my footage from 6 mini dvds into ulead videostudio 10plus & was able to edit all except the footage from one disc.

It imported & said that it was 8 mins long, however it is actually 20 mins in length. In the timeline only the 8 mins is shown however in the project/clip window the footage shows the entire 20 mins but the timeline stops at 8. (I know its confusing!!)

On my camera or using windvd i can see the entire 20 min footage, but for some reason it will not import all of it into the timeline.

In the multi trim section it only previews the 8 mins in the timeline but shows the entire footage in the screen.

What im confused about is a) why it only selected 8 mins of the footage & b) why it still shows me all the footage but will only burn the 8mins

I selected all chapters when i imported as well so it isnt a matter of me selecting the wrong scenes

I have tried re burning the mini dvd, importing as a video, changing my pc's etc & nothing it working.

The 20 min footage is very inportant & i just need to find a way to import all of it into ulead. Is there a way to do it, or any other program that can help me?

I have no experience with DVD cam's but, have you finalised the disk in your camera?

Copy the entire content of your DVD to the HDD and import from there, does that make a diff?

I have finalised the dvd & have been importing it via the HDD which has been great up until this particular disc.

Im definetly running out of options.

By any chance, is there a red line in the ruler part of the timeline above that particular 8 minutes? If so, that is a preview range which may have inadvertently been set. To get rid of it, in Project view, drag the black triangular trime handles to the extreme right and left of the blue progress bar immediately below the preview screen. Note: it will not work in Clip view.

no there doesnt seem to be a line in the timeline.

Its really werid becasue the start of the 8 mins is the start of the dvd & the end of the 8 mins is the end of the dvd. The footage missing is the middle. (However again its not missing cause i can see it when i view it)

Sounds like a messed up time stamp issue. When you render a new video clip from that, how long is that?

If i import it as a video it is the entire 20 mins, however it plays in clip view but in project view the audio is jolting & cant be heard very well, it then jumps ahead to some of the missing footage & then shuts down the program.

I put the 'import video' version of this footage from the hard drive into the timeline & left it raw (didnt edit it). Last night i began burning the whole dvd which is about 1hr 30mins, an hr into the burning it closed down the whole program and mentioned an error that was casuing it to close.

If i open multi trim & try to edit it as i have done with the other discs footage it shuts down the whole program as an error & again the audio isnt working.

Well, my diagnosis is this: the mpeg file is somewhat corrupted. Try a dedicated mpeg editing program like Womble to see if that can fix it. I have no experience with editing mpeg other than getting OOS problems. Hence, I don't edit mpeg and I would never buy a DVD or HDD cam.

I was dreading that news!!

I still dont get why i can watch the entire footage in windvd though. I sort of need to find a way to get that footage over into the program.

I'll keep playing with it. I downloaded the womble product & the same issue with the footage seems to be occuring - so i'll just keep at that as well.

thanks anyway

This is possible with corrupt MPEG files, because the software players are real forgiving. However when editing and then burning, the corruption may not be overlooked by the burning program.

so is it lost forever? I cant even take it to anyone to fix or help?
Its three days of important footage??

No, it's not necessarily lost forever, just unusable right now in VS. Because we don't have any idea what you did/didn't do to it and the project, we are stumped. Where abouts in Melbourne are you? Maybe a personal intervention could shed some light on this. Send me a pm with the details and we'll see.

Do you have the Nero suite of programs on your computer? I am specifically looking to see if you have Nero Recode. let me know.

Ok I just found a link for it:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Too ... code.shtml

Try using that by placing the disc in the DVD tray of the computer and using Recode to...well...recode! You can get it to import the contents of the disc to a folder it will automatically create in My Documents called "Recode." In that folder you will find the vobs from the disc. Try re-importing them into VS and see if they are ok. If not then use recode to burn a copy of your original disc to a full sized disc. Because the program gets tricked into recoding at 100%, as the target is bigger than the source, it will process the data but not lose any quality. I have found in the past that this program has some sort of correction facilities built in so it may fix the corrupt MPEG that seems to be on your disc.
Then import from the new disc and see how it goes.
Worth a try!

K - i downloaded the nero recode & did both things mentioned to do. The files work in VS in clip view, but again not in project (they do show the footage, just blurred & with really bad audio that you cant really hear)

I'll keep trying

Well, laurenacsv managed to hand me the disk today. Even though it was a bit on the hot side tonight, I captured (imported) the DVD files into VS10+, first straight from the DVD, later from the DVD folders copied to my HDD.

I inserted all the clips into the time line and viewed the whole lot, some 34 minutes of it, in project view from within VS10+.

I can't find anything wrong.

The clip properties are:
  • MPEG-2 video, UFF
    24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9
25 fps, variable bit rate (Max 9100kbps)
Dolby digital Audio, 48 kHz, 256 kbps

Any guesses guys? What may be causing the problems of the OP?
