MovieFactory 4.0 and screen resolution

Post by derekw »

I need a way to force MovieFactory 4.0 to launch without checking the screen resolution, or to trick it to think the screen has the right resolution.

I have an a special monitor that can only run 800x600, but MF won't launch unless it sees 1024x768.

Is there a command-line flag, an ini file option, a registry hack, or something that will let it proceed anyway? Otherwise I will have to bundle everything up and send it back for a refund.

I am guessing that if I could use a virtual screen resolution on 1024x768 that would work, but Windows XP doesn't appear to offer that option.

Please help!

I'm sorry but many of Intervideo/Ulead's programs require a minimum of 1024 x 768 resolution. There is no hack, or ini file that can change that. :(

Hi, are you one of the Ulead software developers? If so, can you explain this limitation? If not, how do you know this to be true?

Does anyone know if is there a way in Windows XP to set a virtual screen resolution? I recall this was possible in older versions of Windows.

Thanks,
Derek

No one around here, AFAIK, is a ULEAD programmer but we do, at least we did until recently, have ULEAD technical people participating in this forum. The screen resolution is not required to make it difficult for you. It's there to have a meaningful display of the work space.

Whether or not Windows can be set to a virtual screen resolution you would need to ask WIN support.

Maybe it's time to update your display? I personally have not used 800 x 600 for at least 8 years.

Ron (vidoman) is right. There is no way to change the screen limitation of Ulead products now and the screen limitation is the requirement of Ulead products. See the system requirement in the following page:

http://www.ulead.com/dmf/sysreq.htm

You do not need to be a software developer to know that because Ulead has stated it on the web page.

You can find some solutions via Google, just search "virtual desktop" in Google.

Hope this helps.

I purchased a Hauppage WinTV tuner which came bundled with Ulead MovieFactory. The system requirements on the box say nothing about requiring 1024x768. I have it right in front of me. I understand that is not Ulead's fault, but had I known this limitation, I would not have purchased the product. The main reason I purchased the kit was because I wanted to import and edit home videos.

As far as the screen limitation goes, I'm using a 27" Gateway Destination monitor (yes, its big). It is part of a home multimedia system; that's why the monitor only supports 800x600. The video card in the PC can support much higher of course. So there is nothing to upgrade here.

I tried googling for a virtual desktop product that would let me have a higher desktop resolution than the actual screen resolution. I found lots of products that let you have *multiple* desktops but nothing that lets you change the virtual desktop resolution.

I have some programs that give a warning about the screen resolution but none that actually prohibit you from launching the software. I think its rather presumptuous of the software designers.

I will look around a little while longer for a hack or workaround because I really want to be able to use this kit. If I find anything, I'll post it here.

I checked Gateway Support page and yes I can see why you say your monitor only supports 800x600.

Gateway Support - Gateway Destination 27" Monitor:
http://support.gateway.com/support/supi ... on003.html

Is it a monitor / system that you purchased 9 years ago? If it is, then it's really a time for you to consider an upgrade.

If you are using an ATi display card, you can download the Hydravision software that might fit your needs.

http://ati.amd.com/products/Hydravision/index.html

If you are not using an ATi card, then the software is useless.

The feature you are asking should be provided by the display card manufacturer. I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer to see if they have an solution about this.

And perhaps this would help?

H.T.,

I appreciate your suggestions and help. The computer system is a P4 2.8 GHz Dell Dimension 3000 with 756 megabytes of RAM. I'm not using 9-year-old Pentium 1 Gateway :)

The 27" monitor lets us sit across the room with a wireless keyboard. We watch movies on it and use it for PC games etc. It's a great setup.

Yeah, a great setup for watching not editing. You are, IMHO, not willing to accept any advice that entails changing anything in the way of doing things and we cannot help with making your program work at the screen resolution you want. It appears to me that we are all just wasting our time here.

I personally get up from my lounge room chair and walk into my study, fire up my editng PC and do my video editing. I burn it to DVD there also. Then I take it to the lounge room, sit back in my chair and watch it on my TV. Works great for me. The only thing I don't like too much about my set up is the fact that I still have to get up and go to the kitchen to make my coffee on yet another machine. Would be great if either my TV or my video editing PC could do that while I'm there. Well, aparently one can't have his cake and eat it
