Trial version of VideoStudio 10 Plus keeps hanging up!

Post by David Anderson »

I would appreciate some assistance in preventing persistent crashes in the Trial Version of VideoStudio 10 Plus.

I imported six VOB files from an unencrypted commercial DVD into VS and then inserted a 2 or 3 minute clip from 4 of these VOBs into the timeline of my project. On insertion of the first clip I answered 'Yes' when I was asked if I wanted the project settings to be changed to match the clip settings.

After adding audio fade in/out to these clips and inserting transition effects between them, I started to play back the project while still in the editing window. About 4 mins into the playback, VS popped up the following error message,

Ulead VideoStudio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I have rebooted my PC. I have rebuilt the VS project from scratch. So far, nothing seems to help. VS always hangs at about 4 mins into playback in the Edit window. This is only my second day playing with VS, so I may be doing something stupid! As far as I am aware, all the files relevant to VS are on the same 300GB SCSI disk, with 191GB free space.

What are those settings?

Does the project play back ok before you add any effects or transitions?

When you say it happens at the same spot leads me to believe something in that clip may be corrupt.

Is it the 4-minute mark of the same clip, or at the 4-minute mark of ANY clip :?:

I just rearranged the order of the clips and now the error occurs at near the 3 minute mark in a different clip from before. The project settings are as follows.

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7400 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

Removing the transitions removed the problem. Adding back a dissolve between each clip brought it back. What does this mean?

I've now burned my first test DVD, after deleting the problematic transitions and simply using audio fade in/out between clips. What's good is that the video quality seems to be identical to the original :D . What's bad is that all clips except the first have the sound slightly out of synch with the picture :( (I had noticed this in the editor but had hoped that it was just a preview quirk). Removing the audio fade in/out does not fix this synch problem. Any suggestions?

I've found that remuxing my VOBs in VideoReDo before importing them into VS has resolved my audio synch problem, but VS still crashes every time I try to use video transitions.

I find it difficult to believe that no one else is having this problem. Can anyone suggest a possible cure? I have been able to edit the same video clips in my trial copy of Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 without any problem.

Without a solution, the decision whether to buy VS or Premiere Elements will be an easy one.....

My paid for version of Videostudio 10 plus also crashes

Post by rayh_1945 »

I have today started to use VideoStudio 10 plus for the first time. It isa boxed version not download and it has crashed 10-11 times for no apparent resion.
Is this what I am to expect? I have to save every time I make even a small change so has not to loose my work.

Is this a known problem and is there a fix?

Avoid MPEGs. Especially avoid DivX, Xvid and all other MPEG-4 variants. AVI/DV (i.e. from a MiniDV camera) causes the least trouble. The more compressed the format, the more trouble...

If you're stuck with MPEGs, get a special-purpose MPEG editing program. If you're working with DivX, get a special-purpose DivX program. I use Womble for MPEG-2 editing. Then, I use Ulead to make the DVD.

It is a common problem. Lip-sync problems are more common than crashing, and if you search the forum for "sync", you will find lots of MPEG users having problems.

Lots of people also seem to get away with it, but I wouldn't recommend Video Studio for editing MPEGs. If you feed Video Studio a good clean MPEG, and don't touch it, Video Studio (or Movie Factory) can make a good DVD from it.

After looking seriously at both VS and Adobe Premiere Elements and more briefly at Womble and one or two other video editing programs, I have made the decision to order Adobe Premiere Elements. I might also buy the Mainconcept MPEG Elements plugin for APE, but only if I am convinced that its smart rendering capability with MPEGs saves a significant amount of time (basic APE may prove to be enough for my limited requirements). APE doesn't crash with MPEGs. APE doesn't have lip sync problems with MPEGs.

VS may offer MPEG smart rendering out of the box but it's no use to me if the program crashes every time I use it. It really is rather unimpressive for version 10 of any program to behave in this manner. When will software developers learn that quality control matters more than feature count?

IMHO there is something on your system that is conflicting with VS. You can search the Internet and you will find people have problems with all sorts of editing software - Adobe, Pinnacle, Ulead. You name it, some people have problems with it. I, on the other hand, have never had any real problems (other than self-induced) with VideoStudio 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10. Consider your self lucky that you found one that is compatible with your system. Happy editing.
