This is a cross-post from the MF3 board since no one over there has responded.
My goal is to create a 16:9 DVD using Video Studio 7 and MF3. Video Studio 7 doesn't support 16:9, but I like using it to edit so I'd like to keep it in the process if possible.
My cam captures 16:9 video.
1. Capture 16:9 source in VS7 as 4:3. This results in a AVI file that looks squished (tall and skinny).
2. Edit in VS7 and output the MPEG.
3. Import the MPEG into MF3 and change the project settings to 16:9. This should (in theory) stretch the MPEG back to the correct size.
4. Output the DVD files.
The only step I've tried so far is #1. I'm just looking for confirmation that this should work. Of course, if you have a better method (short of buying VS8) I'd love to hear it.
Thanks
Kevin
I should add that I'm pretty familiar with VS7, but not with MF, which is why I'm asking for some help before delving in too deep.
Question about Widescreen project

I am not absolutely clear, from what you say, whether you have tried first capturing using MF3, and then doing your editing in VS 7. I have never done this, however, so can't comment on how VS 7 might handle 16:9 video imported into it. But as you realise, MF 3 can deal with 16:9 -- you can set it by selecting Create Video Disc > New Project > then click on the first of the three icon boxes down in the bottom left of screen, then choose Disc Template Manager, where you are given the choice between 16:9 or 4:3. If you don't intend to do sophisticated editing, you can of course use MF 3 for the whole process of capturing, editing and disc production. I confess, though, that I use VS 8 for capture and editing (because it has more sophisticated tools) but then usually transfer to MF 3 for final additions, such as photo slideshows, which MF 3 handles elegantly and simply (when compared to VS 8's often dubious results), and disc production (which is more sophisticated that VS 8's, including motion menus).

Hi
From a year old posting
You can activate widescreen in VS 7, through the advanced settings.

Ulead MediaStudio Pro is the preferred choice for 16:9 aspect ratio productions.
However, one can activate ADVANCED MPEG encoding options in Ulead VIDEOSTUDIO 7.0.
1. I clicked MY COMPUTER;
2. I clicked my C: drive;
3. I clicked the DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS folder;
4. I clicked the ALL USERS folder;
5. I clicked TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS and then clicked the VIEW tab to make sure Windows would show HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS;
6. I clicked the APPLICATION DATA folder;
7. I clicked the ULEAD SYSTEMS folder;
8. I clicked the ULEAD VIDEOSTUDIO folder;
9. I clicked the 7.0 folder;
10. I clicked the UVS i-n-i file and then typed ADVANCE=1 under the [VIODRIVER] heading;
11. I saved the i-n-i file;
12. Then I closed Ulead VIDEOSTUDIO 7.0 and re-opened the program.
Now when I enter the project settings, I see a new ADVANCE button under the COMPRESSION tab.
In addition, I see an option to choose 16:9 aspect ratio in the MPEG CAPTURE SETTINGS during capture when the ULEAD DSW MPEG CAPTURE PLUG-IN is selected in connection with an OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 (FIREWIRE) PCI card during capture.
Hope this helps,
