I have read some very interesting comments on the forum on editing mpeg files. I have captured live television using a hauppauge card and software. I put the resulting mpeg file into ulead to remove ads etc and sometimes it works fine but other times the sound is badly out of sync. My question is this--Can Ulead be expected to edit mpeg files or do I have to buy some other software to do this. For some reason I never had a problem with version 9 (now on 10 plus) though this might have been luck

My experience of editing MPEG files is to avoid the use of transitions.
The out of synch issue appears to occur mostly at those points and so the use of straight cuts reduces this to a minimum.

When I first started using VS10 I had problems with out of sync audio. The work around I used was to do cut only two to three commercials and render the file and do the rest of the cuts on the rendered file. That eliminated the out of sync condition.
I don't know what fixed the problem but I don't get out of sync audio anymore even with five or more cuts on a video file. It might be the service packs.

OK, now you've got me curious. As many other have testified, I too can't seem to edit a "stich" in VS. What are you using for the Hauppauge captures Steve? I had to get the Womble product when I found it stopped the problem and is so incredibly simple to use.sjj1805 wrote:I don't use VideoStudio to edit my MPEG files captured from my Hauppauge TV card but..... One of the recommendations of our forum members is to turn OFF smart rendering if you experience out of synch problems.
However, now i've got another learning curve using WinTV2000 or we also just got the ChrisTV app and that captures also. Just when I was really learning how to record from VS10. Thats why i'm wondering if it isn't better to just downgrade to VS9? But I did some random snapshots in WinTV2000 and they looked awesome (of course that doesn't mean the recorded vids will).
Before I was happy, now i'm confused... but still happy. . .

Sorry my post was so confusing Steve. I just read somewhere you also use the MPEGWizard to edit. That's what i was getting at. I haven't been able to edit without the sync problem in VS since ver. 9. When i feel like another battle, i'll go back and try what you have referrenced.sjj1805 wrote:I do all of my TV Recordings with WinTV2000 - this is the software specifically meant to be used with a Hauppauge TV card. Simply import your captured video into VideoStudio afterwards.
Thanks
