[MF4] junk software, junk support

Post by amartinas »

hello. ill be sure that this rant post contains no profanity, but perhaps an over-abundance of euphemisms.

first of all, the support "technology" (that stupid "dont reply to this message, send us stuff from this form in this email body that leads to some stupid page that has a javascript popup bound to the body tag which is fired on mouse over which is worse than piss-poor web design which only ultimately places your problem in a bottomless pit where you will be lucky to get a reply but will wait a few days because supposedly support is off during the holidays but when they get back they still dont respond to ongoing troubletickets") is an absolute heartache wrapped in confusion wrapped in poor turnaround wrapped is crappy customer service.

secondly, what type of software doesnt remove its temp files??! i feel really bad for any n00b computer user who ever tries to use this crap... they will wonder why their 250 gb hd keeps loosing 30 gb every time they make a disk, and eventually have to reformat due to extreme confusion.

i have a disk i want to make. DMF says that the content i have "captured" is 7.39 gb... great. but then i go to make an ISO (i have never experienced a successful direct to dvd write with this crap)... i see the iso being made (after 6 hours - not an exaggeration - of processing a 7 gb disk), and then even get told that it's successful.

however, at the end of the day, i have only 5 gigs of space left on my drive, the iso gets deleted for some reason, and 7 hours of processing are wasted because this program is overbloated.

i dont need any support. i just need others to read this and hope to god they god this software free with a hauppage tv tuner. if i had bought this, i would have to sue whoever sold it to me.

garbage.

Yes indeed.

You did buy it, from whoever sold you the Hauppage card......

Are you that stupid that you don't realise that you pay for what is in the box?

Let us know how you get on with suing the retailer who sold it to you, mind you if you are in the USA I expect a big payout forthcoming

...first of all, the support "technology"...
As far as I know, you don't get support with the "free" SE versions. I don't think they will answer your email unless you have a full retail registered version.

Corel has just acquired InterVideo/Ulead, and the whole support situation may change for the better, or for the worse... we don't know yet.

Digital video is not easy, and we all know that these programs have weaknesses, limitations, and maybe even ...bugs. We understand your frustration. Nobody* is going to claim that it's the best video software, but we have chosen not to spend 5 to 10 times as much for Sony or Adobe. We are here to help each other make the best of the software.

Ulead/InterVideo is mostly "low end" consumer software. They really can't provide much support at these prices. Movie Factory is Ulead's lowest-cost video program, and you have a limited SE version and an outdated version. (I'm not saying that an updated full-retail version of Movie Factory 5 will fix all of your problems.)
(i have never experienced a successful direct to dvd write with this... this software free with a hauppage tv tuner.
The Ulead programs are known to sometimes have trouble with MPEG files. Since the Hauppauge card is MPEG only, Hauppauge is equally at fault for supplying this software with their hardware.

I have a Hauppauge card, and I use their WinTV software for capture, Womble for editing, and Ulead for DVD authoring & burning.

* Well, nobody except PC Magazine.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I'm "on call" for jury duty this week... They haven't called me yet.

These results are actually rare. I've never been on a civil jury, but I know people who have been. Their stories always tell of the common-sense that the jury system is based on.

But, it's always worthwhile to play "lawsuit lotto", especially if you can get a lawyer who will take the case "on contingency". (He doesn't get paid unless you win. Then, he takes a "small" percentage.)

Did you patch your version of MovieFactory with the Hauppauge support patch available here http://www.ulead.com/tech/dmf/dmf_ftp_40.htm?

Often update patches do not work with SE versions but in this case ULEAD explicitly state that the patch is for all versions of MF4.

the suing reference was obviously an exaggeration as well as an expression of frustration. anyone reading into this too deeply should be looked at funny.

yea, i ran that patch, as during some support exchanges, it was impressed upon me that i install it.

one thing i should note is that i am not trying to burn mpegs derived from the tuner... it's dvd chapters pulled from other dvds.. that and some WMV files.

the worst, most frustrating and irritating thing is this error i get when i try to burn my 7.39gb compilation to a disk.. it says "there was a problem with the source file". i have never NOT gotten this error trying to burn anything to a disk with this crap.

i finally managed to get this damned program to make an ISO i could test. it worked fine. but for some stupid reason, the file was 9.15gb.... i assumed it was becuase i normalized the audio (which in fact didnt normalize)... so then i did it w/o normalizing the audio, and STILL got a 9.15 gb file.

WHAT TYPE OF CRAP BURNING PROGRAM SAYS THAT YOURE BURNING X FILE SIZE, AND IN FACT CREATES A BLOATED VERSION OF THAT FILE???

And no, i didnt pay for this software, thats why its oem. its bundled, but certainly not part of the "price" as far as marketing is concerned. thats why theres no phone support for this crap (i just found out)

why support crap software you already know is going to break/not work as advertised/never had a inkling of a chance to work?

thats good business, apparently..

Yeah, they made a ton of profit on you alone 8) I'm just glad there are a number of users out there who obviously use this crap wrongly because it works like advertised, who, without smart people like you, wouldn't have a clue as to what a load of crap they are working with.

Thanks for sharing this crap with us.

Strange I didn't think you got much customer support

one thing i should note is that i am not trying to burn mpegs derived from the tuner... it's dvd chapters pulled from other dvds.. that and some WMV files.

If you've never gotten this error, what's your problem?

i finally managed to get this damned program to make an ISO i could test. it worked fine. but for some stupid reason, the file was 9.15gb.... i assumed it was becuase i normalized the audio (which in fact didnt normalize)... so then i did it w/o normalizing the audio, and STILL got a 9.15 gb file.

WHAT TYPE OF CRAP BURNING PROGRAM SAYS THAT YOURE BURNING X FILE SIZE, AND IN FACT CREATES A BLOATED VERSION OF THAT FILE???

One that the user doesn't know how to use properly I suspect

And no, i didnt pay for this software, thats why its oem. its bundled, but certainly not part of the "price" as far as marketing is concerned. thats why theres no phone support for this crap (i just found out)

If something is included in a box you have paid for it, who you pay depends on who you bought it from. Buy a card with a cd player built in, you go back to the car manufacturer if it is faulty, not the cd manufacturer, the cd player was paid for as part of the price of the car... it wasn't free...... Same with your copy of Ulead, Ulead sold it to Hauppage, who sold it to you, get on hauppages back for selling it you.

why support crap software you already know is going to break/not work as advertised/never had a inkling of a chance to work?

thats good business, apparently..

Why not give us full details of how you are working then we can try tell you how to fix your problem, otherwise why not go play with your working software.

Everybody's had a chance to make their points. But, we're not making any progress here...
