OK, I have both programs capturing now.
I don't have MSP8. I did un-install MSP7 when removing all the ulead products.
I believe your system is working because of the installation of MSP8 and the shared files along with the path statement.
I can break VS10 from capturing or make it capture properly by renaming some files. No matter what files I rename MF5+ stills works either way but VS10+ wants certain files.

Your vid card burped, and it's probably memory issue on the card itself.. I'd try another card...

When you say VS10 wants certain files, is there some place (thread) that has been previously posted that would list these files?

I'm glad to see you have your HD capture working, I hesitate to use HD capture in VS10+ because of the hesitations and jerkiness of the preview when capturing. MF5 is by far the best to capture HD.

Well, now I know why, at least pretty sure.
Keep a copy of your working C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems Directory. A working copy may come in handy for you in the future.
I was also having trouble with VS10+ & MF5 installed. Not sure if it was MF5 causing the problem. Trying to encode HD at VBR was being unpredictable in VS10+ after installing MF5+. It takes so long to render files out and test them. I didn't know if it was me or the program, still not sure but the last render from VS10+ works good.
Even removing Advance=1 in the MF ini file when encoding HD at VBR something was up. CBR never a problem.
Needed to remove, cleanup & re-install these programs anyway.
I have to retest again, in MF5+ if I import 2 videos UFF, Join them, export -> Customize and make the settings equal to the soure the resulant rendered file is created frame-based. Not all the time, most of the time.

GilbyTwins,
Sorry, I didn't see your post before.

I would try this, it solved my problem with capturing in VS10+
Un-install MF5 & VS10, actually all the ulead software.
Rename, Move, Copy as a backup or Delete the following DIRECTORIES
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems

Reboot.
Only Install VS10+ and the latest 5in1 patch.
When you first go to capture in VS10 if the auto-fielding pops up keep clicking on the cancel button & hitting the ESC key. If the program locks then terminate it through taskmgr, relaunch again and be faster to cancel the auto-field selection box (only if it appears), mine comes up because I have a hauppauge capture card.

I also had the cam turned OFF when I went into the capture module. After I was in the capture module I turned it on and VS asked to use, answered yes of course and then captured. Subsequent captures I went into the capture module with the cam turned on.

I don't think you have to do anything with the registry. I did remove all references to ulead on one machine and on the other I didn't. Both those machines now capture in VS10+.

I wouldn't install MF5 unless you have a retail version. Then email me to maybe make them work together. I just got this working so can't really tell if MF5+ is reliable yet in reference to all it's features.

Hope it works

From what tests and registry editing I have done on VS10+ and MF5, I found out that MF5 has a completly different .ini and capture .dll and they don't interfere with VS10+. I'm not sure what parameters MSP8 has because I haven't dug into the .ini or the driver files.

I have experienced some pixelated areas in some of my captures, however it was a dirty head or bad spot in the tape.

On this machine I just fixed the capture problem in about 2 minutes. I have this machine connected to a HDTV with both VS10 & MF5+ installed and VS10 has the problem of not capturing. All I did on this machine was rename the complete ulead directory under common files to another name. Then copied the ~/common/ulead systems/ "Directory" from a computer that only has VS10+ installed and can capture. This way VS10+ will be using it's own distribution files and not sharing them with MF5.
Did not edit any configuration files or registry entries.

Didn't have to reboot or anything. Forcing VS10+ to use it's original files in the common directory lets the program operate as it should. Funny that MF5 also captures even after it's not using it's installation files in the common directory. But, does all of MF5's features work, I don't know, haven't tested that yet. I can still capture analog & digital in MF5.

It's possible that on a machine setup likes yours not having this conflict maybe the installation and patches to MSP8 installs and replaces the correct compatible files in this directory. As you are aware it could be just one small file.

BTW, You pointed me in the right direction by stating the programs you had installed , and they all capture properly. The only thing technically common to all those programs is the ~/common/Ulead Systems/ Directory.

In my opinion this last test puts my problem of not capturing into a nutshell, replace the files in the common directory with VS10+ originals (or patched) and the program now captures. One could try to find out exactly what file(s) are causing this, could be very time consuming.
I have experienced some pixelated areas in some of my captures, however it was a dirty head or bad spot in the tape.
The capture problem is VS10+ is not even close to a bad spot on a tape. The sound loops, computer hangs (doesn't lock, but appears locked, you can terminate it's thread).
I had some bad spots on some tapes, now use one brand. The tapes that had bad spots recorded corrupted Mpeg2 files, so I had to capture around the bad spots on the tape. So for now I'll stay with the Sony tapes only.
Yes, MF5 previewing while capturing is much smoother and very low cpu latency.
I also capture using VMS7 to .m2t files, if imported to VS10 or MF5 they convert them to PS for edting and creating hd-divx files(interlaced).

A have been examining some short, unedited capture files from my HC1 with VirtualDub and have found a few slightly pixelated frames. In these cases (so far) they were at scene cuts that were created by stopping/restarting the recording in the camera or by backing up the tape to reposition after reviewing it (in the camera). BTW, these pixelated frames are not noticeable during playback at 30fps.

So I think we need to explore the possibility that the HC1 (and HC3) may, sometimes, be creating defective GOPs when the tape is manually repositioned.

Yes, but at least we know the exact properties of the mpeg2 file to repair it. If I have a bad spot on the tape then I capture around it, MF5 can sometimes fix corrupted mpeg files using it's "Fast Export" feature by trimming some frames from the beginning of the file the program seems to re-timestamp and reconstruct the file without re-rendering, the process goes very quickly.

I just watched a show on all the new camcorders for 2007. Interesting, when they got to the Sony's HD cam shooting onto dvd or harddisk in the HD-AVC format the first thing they said was "This cam shoots in a Non-Editable Format".

Sony better haul-butt to supply this software or the SR1 will go down in history with other engineering fiascos - the infamous "write-only" memory comes to mind. - or -"So sorry for the invenience but this car model comes without a brake pedal..." :D

It's called shoot & view.
I think it pays to be patient. I would say in about 2 years one will choose to purchase a Multi-Media player instead of a dvd player. One player that does it all will be the market. No one whats all these different periperal devices needed right now to playback all this junk, not to mention the electrical/video/audio cords & routers. One device to do it all.

Once they mass produce the LSI hardware decoder chips they can make the units and they will be affordable.
Don't miss the Colts big game this afternoon :)
