MovieFactory 3 - No Audio on One File

Post by Dick Bowman »

I've looked through the forum, but didn't find anything matching my problem.

Transferring from VHS tape to DVD - capturing with a Terratec Grabster AV400. Mostly this seems OK, but I'm having problems with one file.

Captured as one of a set of four (just stopping and restarting the video player so that I could make separate MPG files on the computer prior to DVD burning).

All four files play properly (with sound) as MPGs on the computer. One of the four loses the sound after a few seconds if transferred to DVD using MovieFactory 3 (which came with the Grabster). Either transferred to DVD as a single file, or as part of the set of four files. Equally oddly, when burning from the set of four files the progress messages seem to think that there are only three source files (although all four show up on the DVD - three with audio, and one with the audio lost after a few seconds).

No changes made to settings either when cpaturing or burning.

Any ideas?

I'm reluctant to move to a newer version if this issue isn't recognised.

 MPEG's  (I have an MPEG-only capture device too.) :(

I'd guess you have a corrupted MPEG. Try re-capturing the "bad" program.

It can be hard to tell, because sometimes a corrupt MPEG will play back OK, but cause trouble when you try to edit it or make a DVD from it.

And to complicate things further, MPEGs can actually become corrupted during editing. If that happens to you , you may need a special-purpose MPEG editor. I use Womble. (I still use Ulead to author & burn the DVD.)

This problem may not be caused by Ulead. It could be a problem with the capture device, or maybe your computer got interrupted by multitasking during capture, etc.

Your 'SE' version of Movie Factory may have been tweaked to capture from you device. If you upgrade, you may have to continue using MF3 for the capture step.

If the problem is caused by Ulead, as far as I can tell (from the posts on this forum) the MPEG editing "bug" has not been fixed... But, I've been editing with Womble I and haven't actually tried editing an MPEG with current Ulead software.

The current retail version does have several improvements, and it might be worth downloading the trial version.

Thanks for the reply - I'd wondered whether the mpg file might have "gone bad" (I'd set start/finish marks - nothing else) but copied my backup of the file (I always take a copy immediately after capturing) and had the same problem there.

I downloaded a trial of Nero, which let me burn a DVD with no problems (and seemed rather faster).

I shall see if Ulead technical support respond to my direct query of yesterday.

Hmm - just joined this forum today to see if anyone had missing audio issues. Although my problem may be different, I would be interested to know if you receive any answers or suggestions from technical support.

I am actually capturing mpg files using WinTV PVR2. I have worked with these files a lot already in Windows Movie Maker, created various sizes of wmv files from the mpg file without problem.

Now that I am editing in MF 3, I am experiencing loss of audio on one clip only. I have opened a closed this project a few times now since I discovered the problem in the preview stage. Sometimes the clip will still play properly in the editing area, but never in the preview. Once I have failed to get the audio to work in preview, and return to editing, the audio no longer works there either until I close the project and re-open it, though even then it is rather hit and miss if the audio will be restored.

This is not the first time audio has failed - on another project I had the same problem, so I just reloaded the original mpg file and re-edited it, this time it worked fine. It is very annoying because it means you have to do extensive checking during preview to find anything wrong. (My projects tend to have large numbers of clips, edits, and "movies" in them.)

Thanks for your suggestions. I had never even heard of GOP before so I used my WIN TV help to look it up. I think I understand what they are and why the lower GOP makes it easier to edit/break the video.

I also know that MF3 is an older version, but that is what came packaged with the WinTV, which I just purchased last July. However, the best part of you note was that the GOP explanation was in a section on how to use the MPEG cuts-only editor with your captured video. Hmm - wonder why I didn't get one of those included with my WIN TV?

And as it turns out there was an uninstalled MPEG editor on the software CD - my installer just hadn't loaded it. So to make a long story short - I am now happily doing my cuts with the MPEG editor and hope to find less trouble with MF3 now that I won't have to use it to edit.
