Hello,
I have a Sony handycam that uses mini dvd discs. I was just wondering whats the best procedure to import video from the discs? Ive tried using the import from dvd option but Ive noticed it only seems to show some and not all of the clips from my mini dvd.
Is there a tutorial somewhere that explains how to do this step by step as I just cant seem to get it right.
I also have dvd movie maker 5 and had problems trying to import from dvd in there too. The list showed that I had title 2 with 20 chapters but On the disc itself I had title 1, 2, and 3 and each had many chapters.
Its as if not all of the titles are imported properly.
How to import from mini dvd

Is your Sony one of those where the DVD has to be finalised before inserting in the computer?
I don't have such a camera, so am not really sure how they work. But I understand that even after they have been finalised, you can still put them back in the camera and use them again. So I am wondering if the disc has been finalised once -- and those are the chapters you can import -- but hasn't been finalised a second time, so the more recent video can't be imported properly... ?

Ken,
Yes it sort of is. It depends on the type of disc you use. I am using +R dvd's which you dont need to finalize.
However the problem is in Videostudio as I am able to import all clips from the disc in Nero vision express. I was also able to convert them all to mpegs using VOB2MPG and then import the mpegs into video studio no problems.
I noticed that when I had imported the dvd and was at the screen that allows you to tick what clips you want, I would tick chpaters 5, 6, 7, and 8 and each time would still see the preview of chapter 4. Very strange I know and a glitch of some sort but not sure how to fix it.
In all honesty converting them to mpegs and importing them is a lot quicker anyway insteaad of working on the disc.

Ticking the boxes doesn't alter what is in the preview screen. You actually have to use your mouse to highlight a different chapter, and then it should appear in the preview screen.
But you are possibly right about using another program. I use the VS Insert DVD command with no problems and find it quick. But if you have found another way of achieving the same result and are happy with it, stick with it! A lot of us here use a wide variety of programs apart from VS in any one video project...

ken,
I do highlight the chapter to view it in the preview screen. All chapters on one side of the disc work fine. However on the other side of the disc I can preview chpaters 0,1 2, and 3. But chapters 4-12 show the same image in the preview window and only play for a few seconds the exact same file.
I know that these chapters all play fine in the camera and also when converted to mpegs or even in Powerdvd on my pc so its something that vs is doing. Ive managed to work around it but Im worried it might happena gain with future projects.
SteveJ,
That is the tut I was following along with but thanks anyway.
