Importing AVI files

Post by m8966137 »

Hi,
I've read most of the AVI file issues here is the forum area, but the outcome is still the same...unable to create chapters and M5 crashes. Here is some info that may help:
1. I purchased MF5 in July of 2006 and it work beautifully. I burned lots of projects with fantastic menus. All AVI files worked fine.
2. It has been about 5-6 months later and I go to create/burn similar projects and it doesn't work. Similar AVI files.
3. Downloaded MF5 patch...no improvements.
4. Downloaded the AVICodec software as advised in a forum repsone. From that info, I downloaded the corresponding codecs for Xvid Mpeg 4. The outcome was the ability to bring the video file in in step 1. Yet there is no preview in the viewing area. MF5 crashes when I attempt to preview the video file. MF5 crashes when attempting to create chapter menus.
5. I've uninstalled/reinstalled/restarted/etc....same results.
6. Would Windows Media Player cause any problems?
7. I can create/burn these files using Nero Ultra just fine, but I can't using MF5. Thats strange!?

Error response: "reinAppName: dvdmf.exe AppVer: 5.0.0.0 ModName: umfnormaledittask.dll ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0003d5fe" this is what I get at the top of the small window that pops up requesting to send Microsoft Windows an error report.

Codecs: Divx, Xvid Mpeg 4

Your help is greatly appreciated as I'm very frustrated! Am I the only one out there with these issues?

Kind regards,

 Xvid and DivX cause lots of trouble!!!! The more compressed the format, the more trouble... (There are even sometimes problems with MPEG-2.)

Check the Xvid web sites for Xvid-specific software. You can try SVCD 2 DVD (~ $40.00 USD).

Or, you can try using SUPER (FREE!!!) to convert your file to MPEG-2 before importing it into Movie Factory.

But it used to work?!

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. Why would it work six months ago and work in Nero Ultra software, but not anymore with MF5? Oh well. At least I was able to get some use out of the software. Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome.

I am totally feeling your frustration and am quite annoyed that no one gave a straight answer on this!

Mine was working just 2 days ago and now I have the exact same issues - each time it tries to play a preview or render an avi file to DVD it crashes without warning with the same error report.

Luckily for me i only have the trial version of MF5 and since you have kindly suggested that Nero Ultra is a working product i think i will go with that one anyway.....unless Ulead can get a decent reply out asap that is....

Who knows what changes have been made to your computers from when they did work to when they didn't?
Two days is quite a short period and you may be able to thing about any changes you have made, the OP at 5-6 months may have made so many changes that they'll never be able to work out what may have caused it.

Lozza,

Have you made any changes at all to your pc system?

That includes windows updates, hardware updates like drivers, software updates, installing any new hardware, installing any new software, installing any new codecs, or uninstalling any hardware/software/codecs/updates.
A mains power failure while MF is open, a windows crash, another programme crash.

Any one of these may well have caused MF to cough at what it used to do.

My video editing pc will not work properly with Nero installed, this pc - my office one - doesn't have the same problem with nero??????, so the OP may well have caused teh problem with MF5 by installing Nero, which due to it's design ravages through your computer and takes over whatever it can without asking for permisssion most of the time.

So if you'd care to write out everything you have done to your pc in those two days we may be able to help out.

Also by writing avi you give us no clue as to what sort of file you are using.... an avi is just a n audio video interleaved wrapper, it can contain files such as dv, divx, xvid, mpeg amongst hundreds of others.

Lastly, Ulead won't give you an answer on a USER to USER web forum, only other users.

Hi Guys,

Thank you Graham for your reply - I apologise for my initial post, the frustration was getting to me i think. But your reply was filled with good suggestions (as well as info re: this forum - Ulead told me to join to get tech support from THEM here ???) and perhaps there was some things that changed that I dont know about (it is a shared computer). What was confusing was how it did work and then just stopped....anyway as Maddrummer said i think i will go with Nero.

I only convert a few avi files (divx & xvid) every few months so i dont mind if other things dont work with Nero installed....also it is a lot more user-friendly as it picks the settings needed specifically for the file as opposed to you having to chose them. (you can override these if need be too of course).

Anyway thanks for your ideas & Ulead for the Trial Software :)

Maddrummer it's not always windows fault with codecs it's how people like nero write their software and make their codec become important in the chain.

Oh wouldn't it be wonderful if we lived in the Utopia of Ulead using it's own codec adn Adobe theirs, people like us could concentrate on editing video instead of answering questions on forums

Lozza,

Frustration out of the way, great, let us know how you get on, as it's only people sharing their results with us that we can pass on extra learned information, be it good or bad.
