What is the small red line on top of the timeline? It has just appeared for me and when I play the video it stops playing when it reaches the end of the line. What is this and how do I turn if off?

You have inadvertently set the Preview Range. Drag the triangular trim handles (under the Preview Window) to the extreme left and/or right.
