failed to open mpeg encoder?

Post by arabprincess »

I sucessfully created a video file before, but now when I try doing so using the same methods, it goes through the process of rendering it, then says failed to open mpeg encoder.
Knowing nothing about anything really, I'm not quite sure what this means or what i've done differently.
If it's any help, captured in mpeg2 format.

What version of Videostudio are you using?
Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing (just in case the encoder didn't get installed or has become corrupt)?

May be the trial version doesn't have the MPEG encoder due to licensing laws.

I would still uninstall the trial version (START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS the select VideoStudio > REMOVE) and then once removed INSTALL it again and try again.

Maybe ITunes has overwritten the MPEG encoder.

Maybe one of the more technical people who respond to most postings may offer a better suggestion.

The trial verions most definitely does have the mpeg-2 encoder (mpeg-1 codec is installed as part of windows).

I think your second suggestion is probably closer to the mark, and that i-Tunes may have affected the balance on the computer somehow, particularly if --as it is usually these days -- installed with QuickTime 7 as part of the bundle. If so, I would uninstall QT7 first, rather than reinstalling the trial version of VS. If you have a version of QT6, try (re)installing that too.

Ken, why is QT installed with VS?
Is it just in case you want to import/export in QT format and/or use any QT clips which may come with VS?
I have uninstalled and left QT off my system as I don't have any use for it and VS seems to perform ok without it PLUS I don't like having software installed which I don't use PLUS QT installs with an 'auto start' in the 'All Users' section of the registry which I object to (also saves having to disable it when creating a 'Profile' for editing).

Frankly, I am not sure why it is installed except perhaps notionally to deal with MOV format files...???  I personally don't mind it. I have a Pro version of it, and I find it handy for other things. One of my friends, for instance, is a Mac user and her digital video camera files are thus in .dv format (the Mac version of PC DV/AVI. The trouble is you can't just change the extension. But QT Pro solves the issue for me.)

As for Auto Start, I simply disable it in the program -- though I grant you that is becoming increasingly more hidden. It used to be on the first page of their tabbed series, but is now on the very last!

I tried uninstalling both programs and it still didn't work, however when I saved a small clip in mpeg format in worked =/

You never told us the format of the original files or their properties; the editing you did to them; nor anything about your computer and operating system.

And was your latest mpeg and mpeg-1 or mpeg-2?

I had said in my original post it was mpeg2 format. For some reason (probably because of editing i did - sorry I didn't mention anything about that) the way i created a video file the first time didn't work, but I tried it the other way (the one meant to use when one didn't capture in mpeg2) and it worked!

thanks for all the advice and sorry if i wasted anyones time...I should probably have tried it the other way before posting :!:

Glad you solved the problem.

I was a little unclear when I asked about the original format. I knew you were capturing in mpeg-2, but what I was trying to ask was what was the source of the capture: analogue or digital, and if digital, was it mini-DV format being captured direct to mpeg-2.
