UVS8 - Drive not ready

Post by dfhawkins »

Recently I upgraded my UVS6 to UVS8 and it seems ok apart from when I try to burn VCD or SVCD. I have gone through the procedures as in the booklet and after creating file first or going straight to Create disk, and at the end (quite lengthy period) of getting ready to burn I get an error box which states " Drive is not ready", and that is as far as it gets. I also have Nero installed and I have no problem making a VCD (using the same video files). I have downloaded all the applicable UVS8 update patches but I see that there are also patches for the burning engine. My existing version is 3.6.15.239. The question is do I need to go for the version 3.6.17.246 and should it make a difference or have I another type of problem

1. If your version of VS 8 is not a full boxed or download version, (i.e. it is an SE version which came bundled with some piece of hardware), then it may have the burning facility disabled, in which case you have to either use another program for burning (as you have done) or upgrade to a full version of VS 8.

2. If indeed, as I suspect you do, have the full version, then yes, it sounds as though the burning engine update is necessary.

3. However, one thing you might want to try first: if you have installed the Nero suite of programs, you may have loaded InCD as part of it (and possibly wondered, as I did, just what it did!!) Anyway, I had a system which worked perfectly well with VS 7, but then, after loading Nero, I started getting the same message you did. After a long process of trial and error in unloading new programs, I found that InCD appeared to be the culprit. (It emulates the function already provided in Windows XP of being able to "Send" a file to another drive or for burning, when you right click on the file...) But it also appreared to cause a clash with installed burning programs' (such as Video Studio's) access to the DVD burning drive (or in your case the CD/VCD/SVCD burning drive). Once I had uninstalled InCD, the problem went away and has never returned. Try that first, but if it does not work, then load the burning engine patch.

Hi Ken

Thanks for the info. I had a good look for the InCD folder and finally located it in Program Files\ahead but the folder itself only contained two files, GAA.BIN (AVG update file) and a ReadMe Text Document on InCD.
The Nero program I have at the moment is Nero StartSmart Express 6 and I cannot see any mention of InCD. I updated to this from Nero 5 several months ago and I think InCD was part of that. However what is in the InCD folder would not appear to cause problems to UVS8 (or am I mistaken?). The version of UVS8 I have is the upgrade boxed disc. I will download and install the upgrade for the burning engine and see if that makes any difference

I don't know what is installed with 'Nero Express' but InCD was also part of Nero 5. However, usually, it installs itself in the system tray, but if you can't find an icon for it there, then perhaps it did not install. You could, however, also check Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs to see if it is listed separately there.

Hi Ken

Thanks for the info. I think the problem is solved now. I had overlooked a basic remedy namely, try another blank disc ! This was suggested by the Ulead team. I was aware that some discs do malfunction but had not associated it with my problem. However I started the whole procedure again with the original disc and when it got to the part where it stops and I get the error message "Drive not ready" I replaced the disc and away it went. I must say though that when using the same VSP file the quality of the finished VCD was much better with Nero than with Ulead.
Regards
