ATI 8500DV will not prewiew with firewire

Post by stickypod »

I have the ATI 8500DV and the onscreen controls will operate the camera, but the video cannot be seen or captured using the iLink (firewire). I have tried everything I can find on this on the Ulead site and on ATI's site. Nothing seems to work. I have the following system setup:

Asus A7N8X deluxe motherboard (has Nvidia chipset)
ATI 8500DV (this has 1394 and so does motherboard)
Panasonic 203 Palmcorder (miniDV)

What is strange is Windows and VideoStudio recognize and operate everything. Only the video and sound will not come through. :?

If anyone can help, please let me know.

These may be dumb questions, but...
Is your camera on the playback setting? (Like you were going to review a tape)
(If you have VS8) Is the Instant Playback Target (preferences) set to Preview Window? You won't see the capture if VS is trying to display it somewhere else.
Can you capture blind, or is there no capture at all? (might help to track down the issue)
Best of luck 8)

No capture at all

Dumb or not, I have a feeling this will be something very simple, or it just won't work. I can preview and capture video thru analog means (Video-S and sound inputs), it just will not display or capture in digital mode (firewire). Good suggestions, but I know I have the preferences set properly (preview window). It will not capture blind. It says there was an error capturing and the file is corrupt. It will not let me keep the file. It deletes it immediately. :(

Well that's pretty well stumped me. Only one more comment: I'm confused that you say your video card AND motherboard have 1394 connection. I've never seen that (OK, there's lots I don't know); which one are you plugging in to? I instinctively think that the one on the motherboard should be the one to use.
Also check the 1394 setup in Control Panel to make sure it's working OK.
Also to capture via firewire you need to make sure the DirectShow capture plugin is selected (Tools => Change Capture Plugin).
Probably useless suggestions but it's all I can think of.

That's my next step

Those are good ideas. The motherboard has 1394 on the board and the video card has it as well. I am going to try the motherboard directly, but I need to wire it up first. I know I did not plug it in when I built the system. The really strange part is if I disable the onboard firewire (which is not plugged in in the first place) the firewire on the video card will not work at all. I lose total control. I do have the DirectShow setup in VS8 the way you suggest. No joy from that either :( Thanks for the input. I will let everyone know what happened when I get it working.

Using the onboard firewire was the trick. I just plugged in my camera direct to the motherboard and it came right up. Both video and sound. I feel good :D It works great. I didn't even make any adjustments to the VS8 settings. Thanks everyone for all the help. I guess Ulead and ATI will have some bugs to work out.
