Capture from DVD

Post by TyHawk »

I have video studio 8 and cant seem to figure out how to capture video from a DVD. The program is not recognising a DVD as a source and doesnt offer me any way to choose a source.

Any help would be great.

You do not "Capture" with a DVD camera.

Take the mini disc out of your camera and put it in the DVD tray of your PC - take care to centralise it in the special depression.

open UVS8 at the edit stage and either :-

1. Click on "File" then "Import Media file to timeline" then click on "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" then browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your Disc - select it and follow instructions and your video will appear in the timeline.

OR

2. RIGHT click in the timeline and from the pop-up which appears choose "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" then browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your Disc - select it and follow instructions and your video will appear in the timeline.

OR

3. In the very bottom left corner is a little round icon with an opening folder on it - click on it and from the pop-up which appears choose "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" then browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your Disc - select it and follow instructions and your video will appear in the timeline.

You may have to finalise the disc while still in your camera for this procedure to work correctly.

What? You can't right click in the timeline or in the library pane and choose "Insert DVD/DVD-VR"?

You don't try to capture already burned DVDs as if they were a camera. In that sense, the Capture screen doesn't have to even be opened. Simply put your DVD in your computer's optical disc reader drive, right click and choose "Insert DVD/DVD-VR", then follow the prompts. A Directory tree should appear showing the structure of your DVD, and there is even a mini preview screen so you can choose which 'chapters' of the disc you want.

The main thing to remember is to tick the little box to the immediate left of each chapter you wish to import.

If that doesn't work, then try using Windows to copy the contents of the DVD to your hard drive, then use "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" and point it to the files on your computer.

The final fallback is, if the files are on your computer, simply to change the ones with the .VOB extensions to .MPG. That usually works, though it will also usually give you a lot of video you may not want.

Be aware also that if the DVD is from a mini DVD video camera, some models require the disc to be 'finished' before it can be imported. But you will need to consult your camera's manual about that.

Beat me to the punch, Brian!!!  At least our advice agrees -- though my initial assumption was that it was a normal DVD, rather than from a mini DVD camera...

If you have a commercial DVD, its copy protected.

I suggest you download the trial version of Video Studio 10, and use the DVD Import feature. (When it works, it works great!)

Or, download VOB 2 MPG (FREE!!!).

As I recall, VS8's DVD "capture" wasn't very satisfactory... I think it made each chapter into a separate file or something....

That rings a bell with me -- I think VS9 (and MF4) started with the option of complete Titles, or individual chapters during the DVD Import...

Ah yes - must admit I assumed from a DVD camera not a standard DVD - but the advice remains the same - providing the DVD is not copyright protected.

Yes I was trying to get video from a DVD recorded from a TV show. Your suggestions worked fine thank you very much.
