I have a quick question for all you guru's out there. I edit sound for production. I have been hit in the face with something new this morning.. and I wll have to start on the project on Jan 16, Tuesday morning. I burn/copy dvd's and cd's and even made dvds to burn from scratch by compiling several files.. no problem.. I also edit/produce audio books on cd/dvd. What I have been handed is a DVD that's already complete with audio. The only problem is now the request is, CAN I EDIT THE AUDIO on an existing DVD by ripping the dvd then using something like DVD Audio Extractor 4.0 and then manipulating the audio and then reburning the DVD once the audio has been altered. This is my first time altering any AUDIO after it's already been put with video. I know I cannot alter the length of the audio or it won't match the video, so basically this guy just wants the background noise and "breaths" removed from the audio. Do I even have the idea right? Any advice will help. Once I analyze the DVD, he won't give me the disk until Monday morning, I will post all the information about what type of files are on the disk. I really know nothing about what I am about to venture into. Thanks for the read!

This could be difficult. I think you can do it, but you may loose the menus and any other DVD-specific features. I've done it, but I created new menus. That was OK for my personal use, but your client may be more particular.

You should be able to extract the program(s) to an MPEG file with Movie Factory's Import feature. But some DVDs fail to import, so you won't know 'till you get the DVD and try it. If import doesn't work, you can try VOB 2 MPG (FREE!!!).

You can extract the audio from that MPEG file with Video Studio, or you can rip the audio directly from the DVD with DVD Audio Extractor.

Once you have an MPEG audio/video file and a separate, edited, audio file, you can drop the new audio into the program and re-author the DVD. (I've never actually used Movie Factory to replace an audio track with an altered version, but I have done it with Video Studio and DVD Workshop.)

If you need to preserve the menus, you can try experimenting with some "DVD hacker" tools. To get you started:

DVD Rebuilder
IFOedit
VOBedit

Basically, I'm thinking that you could create your version of the DVD from the edited MPEG, and then combine the best of both versions to make the final product... You may even be able to de-multiplex and re-multiplex the VOB files without disturbing the DVD structure... but I doubt it.

It may not be worth the trouble. You could spend many hours and possibly not succeed. And, even if you do succeed your client won't want to pay for all of the "hacking time".

Your reply seems very thought out and exactly what I was looking for. I just needed someone more confident in themselves to tell me it "could" be done. Now whether or not it's good will have to be the client's problem. He knew well in advance that any kind of "movie" is made in two parts. Sound and video.. He decided to do both at once and on the same source so now he has to deal with it. If I can do it, good, if I can't, he still has to pay me for my time after I get the disk. Anyone else have an opinion, feel free to give it to me!!!!!!!

Alot will depend on how the client's DVD was authored. Some questions (among many)
-what authoring package was used to create the dvd
-is it one long Title, or multiple Titles put together
-total duration of the clip(s)?
-burned or replicated dvd
-dvd5 or dvd9
-any "protection" on the dvd?
-how many chapter points are in the Title(s), and do menu buttons transfer you to the chapter marks?
-are there multiple aspect ratios
-multiple VTS's
-multiple angles, subtitles, audio tracks, etc...

I would like to think it can be done -- but just how easy depends on the DVD Structure...

Regards,
George
