No audio in Edit Mode

Post by eld33 »

:?: I just bought the full version of VS 8. I used my Pioneer RT500 to transfer my old VCR tapes to DVD-VR. I then used VS-8 to import the video from my DVD. This worked great. However, when playing the captured MPEG in "edit mode" I don't have any sound. It is weird, I don't get sound with VS-8 AVI clips either. But I can play the mp3 files with audio and even Windows movie maker/ media files. Also, I can play the captured MPEG file in Nero 6.3, Windows Media Player and other DVD player software with sound.

I contacted tech support and they just wanted to sell me the AC3 player. I don't think this is the issue and after spending $99 for the software I am reluctant to buy any more products until the issue is resolved....

Any suggestions to resolve this issue is appreciated. :D

Right click on the MPEG file and go to "Properties." Find out what the audio properties are. If it shows as Dolby (Ac3) then you will have to buy the plugin to be able to hear the file and to use Dolby to output files. If you don't want to output files with Dolby sound then do a search on the board and you will find a link to a site where you can get a free decoder.
Post the results on the board.

Shameful!! Marketing Practice

Post by eld33 »

Lance you are correct. Thanks for the help!

I guess my Pioneer VCR/DVD player encodes Dolby. I must now shell out another $30 just to bring this product up to industry standards. My luck is that I buy the AC/3 and then they decide to include it in their next upgrade. Any idea when VS-9 is coming out?

Regardless… this is a shameful marketing practice!!!!

Well..maybe. There is a huge variation out there with regards to hardware software etc. For Ulead to try to cover everything at a consumer level price is probably pretty tough. The bottom line on VS8 is that its primary target market is most likely amateurs with video cameras and I don't think the majority of those cameras use Dolby. Anyway, glad you got it sorted out.

All I can say to eld33 is that if you can find another good video editing program out there for the same price, which already has AC-3 incorporated, then go ahead and buy it.

Lead or Follow... ???

Post by eld33 »

Okay Ken. I get it. If I don't like... go some where else… This is not a bash on the Ulead technical folks….. You care about your product and I commend you for that.

Consider from a customer's perspective, you buy a product that has a key selling feature of VR import. However to use the feature you need buy the Ac3. Dolby is an industry standard and as you see by Ahead's moves, they are including today's technology with their package! They have begun to separate themselves from others in the market!

Nova is working on their new product and it will be interesting to see how their marketing folks play their hand.

One could argue about segments and how much revenue is generated by the add-on software. However, think about the customer :P and how Ulead can separate from the rest of the prosumer editing crowd…..

All the best!

We're all customers on here eld33 - Ulead do not post on here at all - Since Dolby require a licence fee to distribute their AC-3 decoder Ulead had two options 1) - to include the Dolby digital encoder and increase the price of VideoStudio by $30 for everyone whether they need it or not - or 2) - sell VideoStudio at a reasonable price and only charge for the decoder for people who need it - since at the moment it appears only a minority need it I think they made the right decision.

I think the point Ken was making was - how many comparable priced editing programmes can you name that include AC-3 Dolby Digital decoding as standard - as far as we know anything which does include the decoder is a lot more expensive. but if you know different then perhaps there are a large number of us who might be interested in making a change.

Where is all this going...?

I commend you for sharing your knowledge capital in the support of others. I am sure Ulead really appreciates it as well. However, I find it hard to believe that their not lurking about…. 8)

As far as the Dolby fees, I am sure that it is not $30 USD. Their making a chuck of change off this Add-On…. I want these folks to make money but I don’t like their shameful marketing tactics… I read the box and it says that it has VR import editing as a key feature. A differentiator against products like Pinnacle 9, Roxio etc.

Check out the new DVD camera/recorders many use AC3. If you don’t believe me look at the Sony DCRDVD101. It not all about sound, rather compression and disk space!!

Lets look at what Nero is doing, now I know that they have don’t have the video functionality that VS 8 does. But…. for $40USD you do get mpeg4 compression and Dolby compression. All in one package!!

Now think about their recent competitive rebate. They are offering a competitive rebate on VS 8 & 9. Going after VS9 before it is announced or even released hmmmm ?

Does this indicate that they are now positioning for this market with a beefed up video editing software (NeroVision) (Nero 7.0) ……. To me there is a bit of signaling going on….

What would be interesting to know is if Nova & Ulead are collaborating on the new product and how Nova will market their product. Hope they won’t be as shameful.

The bottom line is that buying piece meal software is not a pleasant experience and is not a way to build a loyal following….. I spend lots of money on software and I have real problem with Shameful Marketeeeers!
