I am using PI 11 and an HP S20 PhotoSmart scanner to digitize 35mm slides. The software works fine for a number of scans but then quits with 2 error messages: a Twain connection problem and a message that the scanner is already running. I know the USB connection is good and the scanner is not running.
The only way I can get the scanner back in operation is to re-boot.
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated[/u]

Why are you using PI 11 for the scanning?
I have scanned numerous 35mm slides and negatives using the native software of my scanner. After I scanned the images, there was no problem with editing them in PI 10 and 12. PI 11 is a bit dicey because it seems to run out of available memory quickly (on a 2 GB DDR RAM machine
) and I don't use it at all any more since I got PI 12.
You should be using the scanning software which came with your scanner.

Re: PI 11 and s20 Scanner
I'm glad to hear that someone else still using an S20. Paid an arm and a leg for it about 2000. Still using it...now up to our Hawaii 1972 slides.Jay From Atl wrote:I am using PI 11 and an HP S20 PhotoSmart scanner to digitize 35mm slides. Try pressing the Eject button (on the front, with the triangle). This should reset the scanner. Note that the scanner does not have an on/off button and is always "On." It does have a "sleep" setting over which the user does not have any control. I think it just hates to be awakened.

Thanks for the replies. This is my first time on the forum even though my experience with PI goes back to version 6. I think Heinz has the answer - just scan a bunch of slides directly with the S20 software and edit them later. I pushed every button and turned every knob I could think of to "refresh" the scanner without success.
Sounds like Bobm03 and I are on the same loooong project. I am up to the 1975 Kodachromes, about 1000 to go.

Yeah, I started to look at my old slides also recently, had about 15 boxes full, 2 magazine racks per box, 50 slides each. So far I have weeded it out down to 6 boxes. No, didn't scan the other 9 boxes, threw them out.
That reminds me to get stuck into that again before they all deteriorate too much or have no meaning anymore
