16 bit images in P8

I am having a problem with graphics on a CE device, and I believe it is because my images need to be in 16 bit format. Why is there no setting for this in PhotoImpact 8?

If I remember correctly, I think you can change it by selecting Format->Convert Data Type in the menu....
