With some programs like QuickTime, you may not have the choice. Most will set their autoupdate features to on by default. If you don't reset it to never or manual, your computer could load an applet on startup that will check for and install updates to certain programs automatically. Real player is another of these culprits. Always check to make sure these programs have their autoupdate features turned off or you may develop a problem with a newer, incompatible version being downloaded without your knowledge. HP includes an autoupdater for software AND device drivers on all its computers. If you have an always on connection and leave your computer on all the time, you really should take control of what programs check for updates and when.
