Capture being split into 3.99 GB files
Hi,
I'm just capturing my first digital footage but find that it has split it into 4 separate files, 3 being 3.99 GB. I'm not sure whether this is normal - I was expecting a single file of 13 GB?
I'm using Windows XP and capturing to an NTFS drive. I haven't selected Split by scene.

Is the drive where you have Video Studio installed NTFS or FAT32? I ask since unless you have changed it, your working folder is on the same drive and it could be that which is imposing the 4GB limit... If everything on your computer is NTFS, it should indeed capture in one long stretch.
Can you also confirm exactly what you are capturing, from which device and how it is connected to your computer. And idea of your computer specs could also be useful. And finally, which version of VS are you using?

Thanks for the reply. I'm using VS10, which is installed to my C drive, which is NTFS. I'm capturing to my D drive (different partition) also NTFS. I'm using a Sony TRV33 camcorder, capturing in DV format (Type 1) with a Firewire connection. The computer is an Athlon 64 3200+ with 1 GB RAM and a Maxtor 200 GB SATA hard disk.

I'm at work now and don't have VS10 installed here. I also don't use it regularly either. From memory, you will find this setting in the capture module menu bar under Set Up or Capture. You will have to drill down to it. It is not on the very first sub menu. The function is called Split and you can select to either split by scene or by file size.

I'm struggling to find any option that says split by file size that could account for this. If I select the Capture tab, then Capture Video, under the Capture Folder directory there is a check box Split by scene. This is unchecked. There is then an Options cog: under the Capture options there are a few settings that are greyed out, and Capture to Library which is checked. There is also the DV Type which is set as DV-Type 1.

I don't see anything about capturing by file size either. However, you can capture by duration (on the Capture tab). You don't have a time set in there, do you?

Black Lab: The Duration was set as zero. I tried setting it as 1 hour 3 minutes but it still split the file.
joosuna: I checked the properties of the D drive again and it does say NTFS. I also checked in Disk Management in the Control Panel - NTFS again. As a check I successfully created a single 5 GB file using some other (encryption) software.
In the help file it says "Seamless capture is not available in VFW (Video For Windows) capture". I don't actually know what this means - is it relevant?
Does the fact that it has split into 4 files actually matter? I've put them all into the timeline and played the project for the bit where it swaps from one to another and it seems perfectly smooth.

No it doesn't. It's just as if it were split by scene. Puzzling though.Does the fact that it has split into 4 files actually matter? I've put them all into the timeline and played the project for the bit where it swaps from one to another and it seems perfectly smooth.

No, I'm not saying that. I am using VS10. I just mentioned that in the VS10 help file it says what I quoted and that I didn't know what it meant and wondered if it was relevant to the issue.BrianCee wrote:Fred S wrote:In the help file it says "Seamless capture is not available in VFW (Video For Windows) capture". Are you saying that you are NOT using Ulead VideoStudio for the capture ??????????
Having said that I have just downloaded a trial version of Ulead MediaStudio and done a capture and it has captured to a single 13 GB file. This means it can't be an issue with my hard disk.
I suppose one advantage of it splitting into 4 parts is that once I've finished all my editing it makes it easier to back up the raw footage onto DVDs without using up valuable hard disk space.
I'd still like to know what's going on though.
