Problems with clip/project playback speed

Post by pmoreau »

I have been using VS8 and VS9 for a couple of years and never encountered this problem: the latest video I captured cannot be viewed on VS9 at normal speed - a long clip stops playing after a few seconds, a shorter clip jumps from start to end.
The full clip can be viewed with Windows media player without problem.
On VS9, however, if I change the playback speed to 99%, the clip plays fine!
Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is - I guess it's not the recording, not the capture and not the computer as all is ok with the clip on other programmes. Can it be a setting in VS9?
Thanks for help!

elcome to the Forums Pmoreau ...:)

First we are going to need some more information. Please view This Thread, it provides a guideline to the specific information needed to help you.

Mainly we need to know what type of clip (MPEG-1, 2 or 4, DV, DivX, Xvid, WMV, RM), how you captured it (Firewire from a camcorder, from a DVD, download from the internet, or from a TV), and your Project Properties in VS.

Please complete your System Information in your profile. Clicking on this button -->Image will take you to a short tutorial, explaining how to find and complete that information. This way it will always be available, and will save you from retyping it in the future.

Thank you vidoman.

Most of the details are now updated in my 'profile'; thank you for the very useful tutorial as all this does not mean much to me!

In terms of clips, those are downloaded (USB) from Sony camcorder. Those are in Mpeg format; FFd show Audio Decoder and Ligos MPEG Video Decoder.

The project properties on VS9 are as follows:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3

Is this information useful? Many thanks for guiding me through!

Yes that is somewhat helpful. If you are just experiencing this while previewing in VS, it is not uncommon. The Preview is just an idea of how your edits, effects, filters, all fit together. This is done "on the fly", and most computers have a hard time being able to play this very smoothly.

What I do is in my Preferences set the playback to High Quality. Then I select a Preview Range. To that click on Project Mode(click the word Project to the left side above the word Clip). Then drag the Trim Handles inward so that a short segment is selected. Press Play, and VS will render that segment and give me smooth preview. When I'm finished, just drag the trim handles out to the very ends again.
Have you tried rendering a video file and playing that in Windows Media Player or some other software to see if you are getting the same issue?

Also I noticed you system Specs (thanks for completing that information) do not seem correct (I hope anyway). It says you only have 1.2 Gig Hard drive and 7.?? Ghz RAM. I think it is reversed, even if it is you should have far more then 7 gig of Hard drive space. A realistic size HDD for editing is 200 gig or larger. I have 1-200 gig, and 1-250 gig. Most people nowadays are using half a terabyte (500 gig) or more.

Hi Trevor,
Yes I do recall, however I too can not locate the post.

Pmoreau,

I noticed a post just a few moments ago concerning the FFdshow encoder. You might have read of that. However don't go deleting those files before you know if they must be used by any capturing device.
Post is located here: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 8456#98456

What model of Sony Camcorder do you have? It it has Firewire (Sony's iLink, or IEEE1394) then you are much better off capturing using it then USB. Generally USB is for transferring images and not video.
