Dual-layer advice

Post by gordonwd »

I'm about to do my first project where I'll try to burn a DL DVD. Any particular hints or cautions? Will most commericial DVD players play a home-burnt DVD-DL?

One disadvantage that I can see is that I don't think they make DL-RWs, so it's hard to test the final image the way that I usually do, and DLs make for expensive coasters. Other than that, I assume that I just create one big ISO file the way I always do and then burn that with Roxio.

A way to test the final output without burning to disk is to burn it to a DVD folder on your HD (an option in the burn window) then play it back with a software player such as Power DVD.

Why do you create an .iso file and burn it with Roxio - why not burn direct from within VideoStudio ??

1) I don't trust VS's burning support as much as I do Roxio's.

2) If something goes wrong during burning, I have to re-do the whole DVD creation phase to try again.

3) I can burn the ISO file to a DVD-RW and see how it looks on my TV. If it's good for a final product, I just burn the ISO file to a regular DVD-R with no need to re-render it again in VS.

4) I save the ISO files on an external HD so I can burn more copies of the DVD at any time.

I believe I have read on this forum some issues with dual layer discs where the video kicks over to the second layer. I haven't bought/tried any dual layer discs myself.

To perhaps use the burn to an ISO method you could then perhaps use a piece of software that creates a virtual CD drive on your computer.
In other words the computer thinks that the ISO file is in fact a real CD/DVD in a real CD/DVD drive.

You will then be able to play it back accordingly

Google search Result

This may be a better option than the normal method of burning to a hard drive folder to check this particular issue.

1. The burning compatibility of Roxio is not as good as Ulead.

2. You need to burn to a Ulead private disc image format .IXB so you can burn the disc image over 4 GB (dual layer DVD is 7.9 GB). ISO disc image file does not support to be over 4 GB. And you need to burn .IXB file with Ulead burning tool (Ulead CD DVD Burning Tool) only (you can find the tool in VideoStudio program menu or in VideoStudio install folder).

3. You can take Black Lab's suggestion to burn the DL DVD project to a DVD-Video folder first then try it with some software DVD player like InterVideo WinDVD to know if it works. If it's working, burn the DVD-Video folder to the DL DVD disk with ISO/UDF 1.02 file system (which is called UDF-Bridge) in any burning software you like.

4. Check the following DVD burner compatibility list to know if the DL media you use is compatible with your burner:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters

And check the following DVD player compatibility list to know if the DL media you use is compatible with your player:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

Hope this helps.

I back up a lot of movies using d/l media so as to not have to shrink to compress to single layer
[movies I have bought] using dvd Fab decrypter to rip.
Never tried burning a VS project onto d/l media.

Intersting thing is in Nero burning rom,
it will show burning to layer 1, then after burning the video
files about half way, it shows burning layer 2.

I play these movies on my set top dvd player with no problem BUT
Iwould advise to spend the money and buy Verbatim +r d/l disks
and stay away from bargain basement blank media since therein lies most problems..

I burnt a DL DVD yesterday for the first time. I worked fine. I didn't do anything special. I just clicked the drop down on the bottom left of the burn screen and changed the 4.7 dvd to 8.5. I use VideoStudio 10+

How does one create a .IXB file? I don't see that as a burn option. Also, the Burning Tool looks like it supports .ISO and .IXA, but again I didn't see .IXB listed.

I have done a couple of projects on DL media and they turned out quite well.

I used Memorex DL and Fujifilm DL disks on a LG 4163 burner. But I burned those projects not with VideoStudio 10 Plus but with MovieFactory 5 Plus.

Maybe that's not an issue because it is probably the same burning engine in both programs. (Claim to be verified)

I also tried burning those projects directly with Moviefactory 5 Plus and by creating an iso file then burning it with Nero with no problems.

Hope this will help,

I confess I have never burned a dual layer DVD. No need and they are still a bit too expensive here.

But I am with Gordonwd: I too would like to know how to 'burn' an .IXB file -- and indeed an .IXA file. I have compiled a project which is about 7.5 GB (just for a test -- no actual intent to burn); set the VS burn module for dual layer, and on the final page, I am only given the option to either burn to disc, DVD folder, or ISO image file. No reference at all to .IXA, let alone .IXB.

I have also Googled it, but got nothing which explains how to do it. Amusingly, at the top of the Google searc were the two recent posts by HTChien (including in this thread) telling us it can be done -- but not telling us how to do it!!

In my DVD Moviefactory 5 Plus program folder, there is an application called DiscDup.exe (it's also available from the MF5 Launcher Program).

This program will let you create an IMAGE file. The choices are:
Ulead CDXA Disc Image File (*.ixb)
ISO Disc Image File (*.iso)

btw, I believe an IXA image can be created when you burn a VCD/SVCD to an image file...

George

Thanks enormously, George. Curious that it's hidden away in the Program Folder. I have now added a shortcut to my main menu for it as I have disabled the launcher.

I am assuming that there is no equivalent in VS10 (at least a quick search through the VS10 Program folder did not reveal one) -- which means in turn that to follow HT's advice, one has to have MF5+ or at least a previous version of MF which also has this file...

1. If you go to the VS10 program group (Start/Programs/etc) you''l find a
Ulead VCD/DVD Disc Image Recorder.
In step 1: Select Disc Imagfe file you will see that allowed formats are iso and ixa.
The program is called BurnIxa.exe

2. I have burned 2-layers discs from VS10 without question or problems.
(From MPG files, not a VS10 project.)
This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.
