ignorant newbie! Disk/file size & Apect ratio?

Post by quasimodo1 »

Hello,
I normally use Power producer gold V2. However I thought I would upgrade and DVD Movie factory was recommended.

Two questions please: When I go to burn my avi file from my H/D to my DVD+RW I get the message not enough space. I have a file of 6.99 Gb and disk space for the normal 4.7 Gb. however on my older program Cyberlink power producer this was automatically adjusted by using High quality, or standard play or long play. For a file this size I would use standard play and there would be no problem fitting it on the disk. can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Second question: How do I select the aspect ratio? IE pillerbox or letterbox 16*9 and 6*3 (I think!)

I have got the trial version at the moment as I thought I should resolve these questions before buying.
So.. Thank you for reading this and being patient with a complete ignoramus! Any help would be gratefully recieved!

Im a newbie too to be honest but I think I can answer your questions.

Both of these are options located within the clip properties. Once you have y our avi file on the timeline if you look towards the bottom of MF there are three icons in a row, select the middle icon and you can edit the movie preferences. The first screen will allow you to select between High Quality/Standard/Longplay, there is also the option to select aspect ratio

Hope this helps

Many thanks 50% there!

Hello, and thank you, that appears to be one problem (challenge) solved!
I am, at the moment burning to disk using "Ulead". I will let you know what happens.

Excuse my ignorance but I did not find the apect choice?
May I take the liberty of asking you another question? When I play my DVDs on my DVD player NOT on the computer but my DVD Player/Recorder on my TV. Sometimes it just does not want to play. Sometimes it plays a few minutes and then goes back to the start, but worst of all... It will play about an hour or very near the end and suddenly it will freeze or go right back to the beginning! You can imaging how frusterating that is!

Is it the quality of my download? If so so how do I improve it? Is it something I am doing wrong? Once again thanks for your help. The end result will be when the kids come out to visit I will have a couple of files for them to enjoy! Mike Tagg :)

As for the other problems Im not really sure. I do know that some DVD players dont like some DVD disks etc. Maybe try a different brand? Maybe someone else could help you better with that one ;)

Problem 90% resolved. only aspect ratio to determine?

Post by quasimodo1 »

Hello Adam,
let me say, many thanks for your help. I took your advice regarding the compression (No 1 on your picture) and it worked fine. I also got some brand new disks. I burnt two files and we have just shown them on the DVD recorder/player on top of the TV and they both worked fine. Needless to say we are really pleased.
Last thing. Reference number two on your picture. Okay I go there but there simply is no Aspect ratio there, no drop down box, absolutely nothing. I get the frame size standard which is set at 352 * 576 but the user defined with width and height is greyed out and there is absolutely no sign of the drop down aspect box!

Do you think this is because I have the trial version?
Once again.... Many thanks Adam, we are dead chuffed!

I don't think 352 x 576 is DVD compliant format, is it?
I'm from NTSC land so, sorry in advance if this isn't applicable.

Trial version will not have that option. If you have the full (paid) version, you will get the Aspect Ratio option.

Hope this helps.

352x576 is still DVD complaint and is defined in PAL standard. However, some old DVD players (the first generation) might not support this kind of DVD.

I bought it! But? Doesn't want to play Divx?

Post by quasimodo1 »

Hello,
And once again, thanks for your help. Yes, I have bought the product and now I have the "Aspect ratio" so thanks.
One thing I cannot understand. I have downloaded three files, all avi divx,
Anyway the first two played fine but for some reason the third is not being recognized! The message I get is as follows...

"Windows Media Player" cannot play the file. The player might not support the the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Anyway it sounds dangerous to me! All I would like to do is download some avi files for when the kids come out to see us. So. any suggestions would be gratefully recieved and rest assured this ignoramus is extremely grateful for all the help so far! :)

Since Windows Media Player cannot play the file and you said it's also a DivX video, I would think the file might be corrupted.

If you are using DVDMF 4, there will be an Recover possible lost audio and video data feature in the ADD/EDIT MEDIA step to recover files, maybe you can try it.

Maybe it's not a DivX video but an AVI file using other video CODEC??

Hope this helps.

To DVD-Video or DVD+VR That, is the question!

Post by quasimodo1 »

Hello once again, and once again thank you for your suggestions. I picked up on that correction choice. Which I shall use next time.

So, I have downloaded two files and played them succesfully. I have also downloaded two files one of which I could not play on my PC hence the last question, on my last download I could play on my PC but not on my TV DVD player/recorder.

So the situation is. I believe I have a good download program and a good burning program, I am downloading mainly AVI files. some have Divx and some do not (whatever that means)

My PC DVD Re-Writer is a Samsung Writemaster TS H552B TS 06 It also mentions DVD-Ram.R (Whatever that means also!) I bought some brand new Philips 4.7Gb disks DVD+RW and as I said the first two worked fine.

Two questions... (A) Am I using the right disks? The reason I am asking is I have great difficulty erasing them etc. or (B) Maybe the fault is more basic? I do not know the difference between DVD-Video or DVD+VR
which is one choice and another is DVD-VR, or again Divx DVD.

Confused?

Definately! I tried to look them up in the users manual but I could not find the relevant information

My TV DVD Recorder/player is a Grundig.
I really do appreciate you taking the time to read all this, I hope I have explained myself properly. I did not realise it would be quiet so complex, but I only need to do it properly once and I will be happy! :)

You can check the DVD Player Compatibility List and the DVD Recorder Compatibility List to know what media can be played in your player/recorder.

I would suggest you to try another brand to see if it's the problem.

Or check DVD Writer Compatibility List to see if the RW disc you use is OK with your burner.

Well, I think yes it's a little complex, but after you understand them, it would be much easier to make the DVD you want.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I just bought the full version and installed it, and I still don't have the aspect ratio pulldown. Any ideas? Also, when I had the trial, I could get it to change how much space the file would take on the DVD in the "change MPEG settings"...but now it doesn't make any difference which one of the settings I choose, it won't adjust the allotment of disc space. What's wrong?

Disks! Disks! My Kingdom for a Disk!

Post by quasimodo1 »

Hello all you people who are helping me, THANK YOU!

Firstly, no I have not applied the updates as I have Moviefactory version 4 with Movie creator.

Right, to reiterate... The aim is.. To be able to download files (mainly avi) to my PC using "Limeware" no problem there. Then to burn said file onto a DVD+RW using my Samsung TS H553B DVD Re-Writer in my PC and the "Ulead" program. Then play the files on my TV using my televisions (Philips) DVD Player/Recorder.

So far so good, I can do that, and I can play back on my PC! (By the way I am using the DVD-Video or DVD+VR choice out of the four choices given)

So I start to burn, no problem I did try that "Check for corrupted files" button but when clicked it came up with.. this file is unsupported. However it does not seem to have made much difference.

Anyway it burns okay and the job is finished. I take the disk downstairs and with eager anticipation put it in my televisions (Philips) DVD Player/Recorder. What happens? It keeps coming up "Disk Error" or "Unreadable format"!

I am not sure what to do from here. I shall keep trying burning because I have succeeded in the past. All the equipment is less than a year old all bought and used here in Spain. the DVD+RW disks are brand new and bought here also.

At the moment I am burning a file and it says the recording format is DVD-Video. I will try and play it when finished. Once again many thanks to all of you for your help. it really is appreciated! I also think the kids will appreciate as well!

Finally, I have e-mailed "Philips" UK to see if they have any answers.

Thanks for reading this. Mike Tagg 8)
