Reading the fileformat

Dear Sir Madams,
we are developing a document management system in PHP and want to identify ufo-images, get information (resolution, color-depth, maybe metatags) and create screenshots.
Is there any way to do this? Is information available? Or is the Photoimpact-Format protected?
