Trouble rendering AVI file which is really MPEG4, converter?

Post by craigstr »

 I have no luck with ULEAD tech support on this. I have a Samsung sc-x105L DV camera. It uses a file type AVI which really is MPEG4. VS10 worked fine for a month, I was able to import, edit and make DVDs with no problems. Then one day suddenly I imported a file, played it, tried to trim it, and VS10 couldnt render it, the sound played correctly but the picture was all scrambled. I unistalled everything and did a clean install(you know removing all the ulead directories and hidden files). I reinstalled VS10 and the camera software which is a SEDG codec. Now the program renders the first frame and the sound, but the picture stays frozen on the first frame. Anybody help me on this?? Ulead has been useless, they told me that the program probably isnt compatible, sorry. I would think they would at least want a small clip of the video to see if they could get it to work. Anybody know of a good converter???

Here is something to try.
(1) Insert a short mpeg4 file into the Video Studio EDIT Timeline.
(2) Select SHARE/Create Video File / Custom / Options/ Compression Tab.
(3) Select Media Type = NTSC DVD, Bitrate=VBR 8000Kbps, audio properties to match the mpeg4 file.
(4) Select General Tab, set frame to 720x480, Field Order = Frame Based, aspect ratio to match your mpeg4,
(5) Leave Non-Square pixels and Smart Render enabled, name the file and hit the same button.
Playback the video file using Media Player Classic or WMP11. If it works OK, you will be able to edit it in Video Studio and smart render a DVD-Compliant video file.

It just might work...

I didnt have some of the options available like Compression under the custom tab and I have VS10+, but I saved it as NTSC DVD MPEG4 and I was able to edit the saved clip. But I would sure like to be able edit the footage without converting everything.

Video Studio 10+ chokes and sputters when I try to edit Mpeg4. IMO, you will have to transcode it to a format that is editable or find an editor that can edit Mpeg4. I have not found one.

If you have Video Studio version 10+, you have the same options that I do.

When you select Create Video File, "Custom" is a selection choice at the bottom. Click it. Then another window opens (the save window). Click the "Options" button. Yet another window opens with four tabs. The bottom (rightmost) TAB is labled "Compression" - select it. The dropdown control at the top is where you select "Media Type". This is where you select NTSC-DVD (DVD Mpeg4 is not a choice). Continue as I specified above, setting up the General Tab and the Ulead Video Studio TAB.

This should give you a clean DVD compliant mpeg2 video file that you can edit. It will be larger than your Mpeg4 file.
