Glad to be BACK!!

HI Everyone, I'm new to this BB but NOT to PI. I have used it for years and am currently using V8. I was sad to see the other PI BB had passed away but ecstatic to see this one. I have not had time before to track it down but I have joined and am looking forward to being with you again. I think I began with PI 4 or 5, having bought Stephanies books. I use PI for ALL my editing but wonder if it is really worth while to get V12? If I do, must I uninstall V8? If so, I might stay where I am to minimize any problems. If I try the trial version, would I have to uninstall that too?
As you may notice, it has been a long time since I installed V8 and at 78 years of age, I am not quite sure of myself.
Thanks and it's neat to see so many of you .
Bobbie :P :lol: :D

Welcome to the forums, Bobbie...:)

I only started using PI with V11, and now use PI12 most of the time. I will say that I continue to have both versions installed, and both work happily together. This goes also for all my Ulead video and DVD apps.

For most of Ulead's applications we recommend not activating the TBYB versions. The reasoning is due to the SPs not recognizing the unlocked TBYBs as full versions, thus not installing. So it seems better to uninstall a TBYB, then install the Full version. As stated above you should not have to uninstall your PI-8.

I'll let you decide on if it is worth upgrading to PI-12. I know that I have read several posts by the Moderator of this forum, Heinz-oz. He had been using PI-10 when version 11 was released. He did not like PI-11, and didn't have much nice to say about it. He stood by V10. Now he uses and praises PI-12. To me that was a major endorsement, enough to prompt me to go for PI-12, and I do not regret doing so.

If you need help, you now know where we are, and will do all we can to help, and keep your PI experience a pleasant one..

Welcome aboard again Bobbie..:)

Hi Bobby, and welcome to the forum.

First I want to thank vidoman for his kind words, I don't get that too often :lol: :lol: (just browse my post on this board and you will know why :wink: , I dislike people that want to be given everything without doing anything themselves 8) )

I started using PI with version 8 SE, I think. I got that with some computer magazine for free. Didn't really know what to do with it but bought the upgrade to PI XL. Shortly after, my PC died on me. It didn't really die but I killed it because it was playing up 8) . When re-installing everything, I couldn't find my copy of the first PI program and, hence, could not install PI XL because it was an upgrade and the installer asked me for the setup.exe of the qualifying program, PI 8, which I didn't have.

To cut a long story short, I went and bought the full version PI 10 because I had started to do things with my photos. Somehow, when hunting for tutorials for PI, I came across the PIRC board http://www.pircnet.com/ and realized there was something like a free beginners workshop for PI. I took that and never looked back.

Now back to your questions. I'm not sure where you are located and which exact version of PI 8 you are using. If you are in the USA, chances are you have the NOVA marketed version of PI. If that's the case, I'm afraid you would have to uninstall the old version, if you are thinking of getting a new one, because NOVA only allow one version to be installed at any given time. If you were to get a full version Ulead PI 12, either ESD (download) or a boxed version, you can install that alongside your old version. You just can't update from NOVA to ULEAD PI. You can buy ULEAD PI on the internet here http://www.ulead.com/store/pi/runme.htm and, if your version is the Ulead one, not the NOVA release, you can simply buy the cheaper upgrade version. The upgrade is identical to the full version but has a loyalty discount built in. You will need the serial number of PI 8 though to install the upgrade. Having PI 8 still installed, it should be found by the installer and the installation will finish with no questions asked.

You can also get the trial version and do not need to uninstall PI 8 to use that. It will stop working after 30 days though. Also, you will not get all the extra content and EasyPalette items with the trial.

Since it has been a while since you installed PI, I wonder of your PC is up to the new version PI 12? What are your system spec's? Please note the minum requirement for PI 12:
* Intel Pentium III compatible or above
* Microsoft Windows® 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows® XP Service Pack 2 Home Edition / Professional, Windows®XP Media Center Edition, Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition
* CD-ROM Drive
* 256 MB RAM
* 750 MB available hard drive space for program and content files
* True Color or Hi-Color display adapter with 1024x768 resolutions or higher
It doesn't run on anything less than WIN2000 SP 4 and requires a lot of RAM (I use 2 GB) and is rather set on a high resolution display.

I would advice against it if your computer is not better than the minimum requirement in regards to RAM and hard disk space.

@Robert Pearce

Just re-read you OP and realized that you are on XP Pro. Do you have SP 2 installed?

Hi Robert

I guess by other BB and since you mention Stephanies books you mean the PIBB.

As Heinz says the other board very similar used to be called PIRC but is now known as PhotoImpact International http://photoimpact-international.com/

You will find a very active activity based board over there probably rather more like PIBB than this board which is a very good mainly support based board.

Hi Everyone and thanks for the replys. Heinz, I do have a pretty good machine. I have 1GB Ram, and about 115 GB of free hard drive plus I run XP Pro , so I should be ok to install version 12, but since I have no problems with V8, I think I might just stay with it for now.
I'm glad there are forums still active. I'll visit the Int. one soon. Looked at the home page but no time right now to explore it.
once more, thanks to you all. Oh, by the way, I DO live in the US, New York State actually. :P

Hi Bobbie, if PI 8 does all you want to do and you do not need better digital photo RAW support, maybe you do not need to upgrade. PI 12 is a great program but it's layout has changed since PI 8 and you would have to rediscover all the tools you are used to use.

If you care to update your system details in your profile, you get excellent instructions how to do that here http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8963, nobody would make inappropriate guesses at your systems capabilities anymore. :wink:
